How to Use

Dosage

Adults and children over 12: Typically 4 grams of piperacillin and 0.5 grams of tazobactam into a vein every 6–8 hours. Children 2–12 years with abdominal infections: 100 mg piperacillin and 12.5 mg tazobactam per kg of body weight into a vein every 8 hours. Children 2–12 years with low white blood cell count: 80 mg piperacillin and 10 mg tazobactam per kg of body weight into a vein every 6 hours.

Method

A healthcare professional will give you this medicine as an intravenous drip (infusion) over about 30 minutes.

Important

Your doctor will determine a child's dose based on weight, but a single dose must not exceed 4 grams of piperacillin and 0.5 grams of tazobactam. For adults, the maximum daily dose is usually 12–16 grams of piperacillin and 1.5–2 grams of tazobactam.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Fungal infection
  • Changes in blood counts (e.g., low platelets, red blood cells, or hemoglobin), abnormal lab tests, prolonged blood clotting time
  • Decreased blood protein
  • Headache, insomnia
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, indigestion
  • Increased liver enzymes
  • Rash, itching
  • Abnormal kidney tests
  • Fever, injection site reactions
RARE
  • Decreased white blood cells, prolonged blood clotting time
  • Low blood potassium and sugar levels
  • Seizures or convulsions (especially with high doses or kidney problems)
  • Low blood pressure, vein inflammation (tenderness, redness), skin redness
  • Increased bilirubin (a blood pigment)
  • Skin reactions such as redness, lesions, hives
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Chills
  • Severe drop in white blood cells, nosebleeds
  • Severe colon inflammation, mouth inflammation
  • Widespread skin peeling (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Severe decrease in red and white blood cells and platelets (pancytopenia)
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, bullous skin disease, or DRESS syndrome (rash affecting internal organs)
  • Liver inflammation, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Worsening kidney function or kidney problems
  • Lung disease with increased eosinophils (a type of white blood cell)
  • Confusion and disorientation (delirium)
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, penicillins, cephalosporins, or similar antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you experience severe diarrhea before, during, or after treatment.
  • Inform your doctor if you have low potassium levels in your blood.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems or if you are on dialysis.
  • Report to your doctor if you are taking vancomycin (another antibiotic) or blood thinners (anticoagulants), as these may increase the risk of side effects.

  • Tell your doctor if you experience seizures during treatment.
  • Contact your doctor if you suspect your infection has worsened or if you develop a new infection.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you have several symptoms like fever, swollen lymph nodes, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, bruising, or rash, as these can be signs of a rare, serious immune condition (hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis).
