How to Use

Dosage

Adults and adolescents over 12 years: 4 g / 0.5 g of piperacillin/tazobactam every 6-8 hours. For children aged 2-12 years, the dose is based on body weight and decided by your doctor, usually every 6-8 hours.

Method

This medicine is given as a 30-minute drip (infusion) into a vein by a doctor or nurse.

Important

The maximum single dose for adults and children is 4 g / 0.5 g of piperacillin/tazobactam. The maximum daily dose for adults is typically 16 g / 2 g, given in divided doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Yeast infection
  • Changes in blood tests (e.g., fewer platelets or red blood cells, longer clotting time)
  • Headache, trouble sleeping
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, indigestion
  • Increased liver enzymes in blood tests
  • Rash, itching
  • Abnormal kidney test results
  • Fever, reaction at the injection site
RARE
  • Reduced white blood cells
  • Low blood potassium or sugar
  • Seizures
  • Low blood pressure
  • Vein inflammation (redness or tenderness), skin redness
  • Increased bilirubin (a substance from red blood cells)
  • Hives, joint and muscle pain, chills
  • Nosebleeds
  • Severe inflammation of the colon or mouth lining
  • Severe skin reactions, including widespread blistering, peeling skin, or a rash with fever, swollen glands, and organ issues (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, DRESS, AGEP)
  • Liver inflammation, yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Kidney problems or kidney failure
  • Lung disease with an increase in certain white blood cells (eosinophils)
  • Acute confusion or delirium

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, or other penicillin-type antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have severe diarrhea during or after treatment, and do not take anti-diarrhea medicine without asking.
  • Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, or if your blood potassium is low.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking blood thinners or experience any unexpected bleeding.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience seizures during treatment.

  • Tell your doctor if you suspect a new infection or if your current infection gets worse.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop symptoms like fever, swollen lymph nodes, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, bruising, or rash, as these could be signs of a serious immune condition (Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis).
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 2 years of age.
