Piperacillin/Tazobactam Qilu

This medicine is an antibiotic containing piperacillin and tazobactam, used to treat many types of serious bacterial infections in different parts of the body, including the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, and blood.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults and adolescents over 12 years, the usual dose is 4 g / 0.5 g of piperacillin/tazobactam. For children 2–12 years with abdominal infections, it's 100 mg / 12.5 mg per kg body weight; with a low white blood cell count, it's 80 mg / 10 mg per kg body weight. Your doctor will determine the exact dose.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion (a drip) into a vein over approximately 30 minutes. It is usually given every 6–8 hours, as directed by your doctor.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose for adults is typically 16 g / 2 g of piperacillin/tazobactam. For children, a single dose must not exceed 4 g / 0.5 g, and the total daily dose is based on weight, as determined by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Yeast infection
  • Lower numbers of blood cells (platelets, red blood cells, or hemoglobin)
  • Abnormal blood clotting tests
  • Lower blood protein levels
  • Headache
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Stomach pain, throwing up, feeling sick, constipation, upset stomach
  • Higher liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Rash, itching
  • Abnormal kidney test results
  • Fever
  • Reaction where the injection was given (pain, redness)
RARE
  • Lower number of white blood cells
  • Prolonged blood clotting time
  • Lower blood potassium or sugar levels
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Low blood pressure
  • Inflammation of a vein (redness, tenderness)
  • Red skin (flushing)
  • Higher bilirubin levels (a substance from red blood cells)
  • Red skin reactions, skin changes, hives (itchy bumps)
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Chills
  • Nosebleeds
  • Severe inflammation of the large intestine (colon) or mouth lining
  • Severe skin reactions, such as peeling of the top layer of skin (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Severe decrease in red or white blood cells and platelets (pancytopenia), or increased levels of certain white blood cells (eosinophils), sometimes with small bruises or increased bleeding time
  • Allergic reactions, including severe systemic reactions with rash, blisters, or skin peeling (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, DRESS, AGEP)
  • Liver inflammation or yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Kidney failure or problems
  • Lung disease with increased eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) in the lungs
  • Confusion and disorientation (delirium)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, or other penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have diarrhea before, during, or after treatment, and do not take any diarrhea medicine without consulting them first.
  • Inform your doctor if you are also taking vancomycin, as combining these medicines can increase the risk of kidney damage.
  • Your doctor may regularly check your kidney and liver function and blood values, especially if you have kidney or liver problems or low blood potassium levels.
  • Tell your doctor if you are using blood thinners or experience unexpected bleeding, as this medicine can affect blood clotting.

  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience seizures (fits).
  • Inform your doctor if you suspect your infection is getting worse or you have developed a new infection.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience fever, swollen glands, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, bruising, or rash, as these can be signs of a rare but serious immune disorder (hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis).
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 2 years of age.
