How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children over 12, the usual dose is 4 g/0.5 g, given into a vein every 6 to 8 hours. For children aged 2-12, the dose depends on their weight and the type of infection, given every 6 or 8 hours.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine as a drip (infusion) into one of your veins over 30 minutes.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose. For adults, it can be up to 16 g/2 g per day, given in doses every 6-8 hours. For children, no single dose should be more than 4 g/0.5 g.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Yeast infection
  • Changes in blood tests (e.g., lower red blood cells or platelets, longer bleeding time)
  • Lower protein levels in blood
  • Headache, difficulty sleeping
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, upset stomach
  • Increased liver enzymes (shown in blood tests)
  • Rash, itching
  • Abnormal kidney test results
  • Fever, reaction at the injection site
RARE
  • Further changes in blood tests (e.g., lower white blood cells, longer blood clotting time)
  • Lower blood potassium and sugar levels
  • Seizures (fits), especially with high doses or kidney problems
  • Low blood pressure, inflamed vein (pain or redness), skin redness
  • Increased bilirubin (a substance from red blood cell breakdown)
  • Red skin reactions, skin changes, hives
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Chills
  • Very low white blood cells, nosebleeds
  • Severe colon inflammation, mouth sores
  • Severe skin peeling (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Serious changes in blood cells (low red, white, or platelets), easy bruising, longer bleeding time
  • Allergic reactions, including severe whole-body reactions
  • Liver inflammation, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Severe skin reactions, including widespread rash, blistering, and peeling skin (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, DRESS, AGEP)
  • Poor kidney function or kidney problems
  • A type of lung disease (eosinophilic pneumonia)
  • Confusion, feeling disoriented

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, other penicillins, cephalosporins, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, or if you are on dialysis.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially blood thinners or other antibiotics like vancomycin, as they can interact with this medicine.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe diarrhea, seizures, or if your infection gets worse or you get a new infection.
  • Your doctor may check your blood if you have low potassium levels.

  • Seek urgent medical help if you develop a fever, swollen glands, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, bruising, or rash, as these could be signs of a serious immune reaction (HLH).
  • If you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding, ask your doctor for advice before using this medicine.
  • If you have cystic fibrosis, there might be a higher risk of fever and rash.
  • This medicine can sometimes cause changes in brain function and seizures.
