How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults and children over 12 is 4 g/0.5 g of piperacillin/tazobactam given every 6 to 8 hours. Your doctor will determine your exact dose.

Method

This medicine is given to you by a doctor or nurse as a drip (infusion) into a vein, usually over 30 minutes.

Important

Up to 16 g/2 g (piperacillin/tazobactam) per day for adults and children over 12, as determined by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
  • Rash, itching
  • Headache, trouble sleeping
  • Fungal infection
  • Fever, reaction at the injection site
RARE
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Severe skin rashes, including blistering and peeling skin (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Serious allergic reactions with swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or difficulty breathing
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., low white blood cells, increased bleeding or bruising)
  • Kidney problems or liver inflammation
  • Feeling disoriented or confused

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, penicillin, or any similar antibiotics. Always tell your doctor about all your allergies.
  • If you experience severe or persistent diarrhea, especially if it comes with fever or weakness, tell your doctor immediately. Do not take other anti-diarrhea medicines without consulting your doctor.
  • Your doctor may perform regular blood and kidney tests if you have kidney or liver problems, or low potassium levels.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially blood thinners, other antibiotics (like vancomycin), or methotrexate, as they can interact with this medicine.
  • If you have seizures or notice signs of a new or worsening infection, tell your doctor or nurse right away.
