Piperacillin/Tazobactam Kalceks

This medicine is an antibiotic combining piperacillin and tazobactam to fight a wide range of bacterial infections, including those resistant to other treatments.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children over 12 years: 4 g/0.5 g given intravenously every 6-8 hours. For children aged 2-12 years with abdominal infections: 100 mg/12.5 mg per kg body weight every 8 hours. For children aged 2-12 years with low white blood cells: 80 mg/10 mg per kg body weight every 6 hours. Your doctor will determine the exact dose.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion (a drip) into a vein by a doctor or nurse over 30 minutes.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose. For children, a single dose should not exceed 4 g/0.5 g.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
RARE
  • Fungal infection
  • Changes in blood cell counts (lower red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets; sometimes higher platelets or a type of white blood cell called eosinophils)
  • Trouble sleeping, headache
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, constipation, feeling sick (nausea), indigestion
  • Rash, itching, hives (itchy bumps), red skin reactions, skin damage
  • Fever, reaction at the injection site (like pain or redness)
  • Abnormal blood test results (e.g., lower protein, higher liver enzymes, abnormal kidney values, longer blood clotting time, false positive Coombs test)
  • Low blood potassium
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Low blood pressure, vein inflammation (tenderness or redness), facial flushing
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Chills
  • Low blood sugar, high bilirubin (a substance from red blood cells), longer blood clotting time
  • Nosebleeds
  • Inflammation of the mouth lining
  • Severe decrease in all blood cell types (red, white, platelets), or specific white blood cells, red blood cell breakdown, increased platelets or eosinophils
  • Allergic reactions (can be severe)
  • Sudden confusion and disorientation (feeling lost)
  • Lung disease with increased eosinophils (a type of white blood cell)
  • Liver inflammation, yellowing of skin or eyes
  • Small, spotted bruises (purpura)
  • Kidney failure and other kidney problems
  • Severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, or other blistering/peeling rashes that can be life-threatening
  • Very severe allergic reactions affecting skin, kidneys, or liver (e.g., DRESS syndrome)
  • Skin reaction with fever and fluid-filled blisters over large areas of swollen, red skin (acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis)
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
  • Severe or long-lasting diarrhea with fever or weakness

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, penicillins, cephalosporins, or similar antibiotics, as you might also be allergic to this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have allergies, a history of diarrhea, low blood potassium, or kidney or liver problems, or if you are on dialysis.
  • Also mention if you are taking vancomycin (another antibiotic, as it might increase kidney damage risk) or blood thinners.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you experience severe diarrhea during or after treatment, unusual bleeding, seizures, or if you suspect a new infection or worsening of an existing one.
  • This medicine can cause a severe immune reaction called hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). Seek immediate medical help if you have fever, swollen lymph nodes, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, bruises, or rash.

  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 2 years old, as there is not enough information about its safety and effectiveness in this age group.
  • Tell your doctor or lab staff if you are taking this medicine before any blood or urine tests, as it can affect the results.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, think you might be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine, as it can pass to the baby.
