How to Use

Dosage

Adults and children over 12 usually receive 4g/0.5g every 6-8 hours; children aged 2-12 receive 100mg/12.5mg per kg every 8 hours for belly infections, or 80mg/10mg per kg every 6 hours for low white blood cell counts, adjusted by a doctor based on age, weight, and kidney function.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine as a drip (infusion) into a vein over 30 minutes.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose; for children, each individual dose should not exceed 4g/0.5g.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea

  • Yeast infection
  • Decrease in platelets, red blood cells, or hemoglobin (blood pigment)
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, constipation, nausea, upset stomach
  • Rash, itching
  • Fever, reaction at injection site
  • Changes in blood tests (e.g., lower protein, higher liver enzymes, abnormal kidney values, prolonged blood clotting time)
  • Decrease in white blood cells
  • Decrease in blood potassium
  • Low blood pressure, vein inflammation (tenderness or redness where affected), facial flushing
  • Red skin reactions, skin damage, hives
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Chills
  • Low blood sugar, increased bilirubin (a substance from red blood cell breakdown), prolonged blood clotting time
  • Nosebleeds
  • Mouth inflammation
  • Severe decrease in red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets (pancytopenia), decrease in white blood cells called neutrophils (neutropenia), early breakdown of red blood cells, increase in platelets, increase in white blood cells called eosinophils (eosinophilia)
  • Allergic reactions
  • Sudden confusion and delirium
  • Lung disease with increased eosinophils (a type of white blood cell)
  • Liver inflammation, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • Small, pinpoint bruises (purpura)
  • Kidney failure and other kidney problems
  • Changes in blood tests (e.g., prolonged bleeding time, increased gamma-glutamyltransferase levels)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, or other penicillin-like antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor if you have allergies, a history of diarrhea, low blood potassium, kidney or liver problems, or if you are taking vancomycin or blood thinners.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have diarrhea during or after treatment, unusual bleeding, seizures, or signs of a new or worsening infection.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience fever, swollen lymph nodes, extreme tiredness, dizziness, shortness of breath, bruising, or rash, as these could be signs of a serious immune system disorder.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop severe skin reactions like widespread rash, blisters, peeling skin, or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, eyes, or genitals, or if your skin or eyes turn yellow.

  • Get urgent medical help if you have a serious allergic reaction, including swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or other body parts, shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing, or severe widespread hives.
  • Inform your doctor if you experience signs of blood problems, such as unusual tiredness, red or brown urine, small bruises on your skin, or a severe drop in white blood cells.
  • Report to your doctor if you have severe or long-lasting diarrhea that comes with fever or weakness.
