Piperacillin/Tazobactam Fresenius Kabi

This medicine is an antibiotic that combines two drugs, piperacillin and tazobactam, to fight various bacterial infections, including those that are resistant to other treatments.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children over 12, the usual dose is 4 g/0.5 g, given every 6-8 hours.

Method

This medicine is given as a 30-minute infusion into one of your veins by a doctor or nurse.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 16 g/2 g, but your doctor will decide the exact dose for you.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Yeast infection
  • Changes in blood cells (like fewer platelets or red blood cells, or unusual blood test results), prolonged clotting time
  • Decreased protein in blood
  • Headache, trouble sleeping
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, indigestion
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Skin rash, itching
  • Abnormal kidney test results
  • Fever, reaction at the injection site
RARE
  • Decrease in certain white blood cells (leukopenia), prolonged clotting time
  • Low potassium or blood sugar levels
  • Seizures (especially with high doses or kidney problems)
  • Low blood pressure, inflamed veins (tenderness or redness), skin redness
  • Increased levels of bilirubin (a substance from red blood cell breakdown)
  • Red skin reactions, changes in skin appearance, hives
  • Joint and muscle pain, chills
  • Severe decrease in white blood cells (agranulocytosis), nosebleeds
  • Severe inflammation of the colon, mouth sores
  • Widespread skin peeling (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Severe decrease in all blood cells (pancytopenia), premature breakdown of red blood cells, small bruises, prolonged bleeding, increased platelets, increase in a type of white blood cell (eosinophils)
  • Severe allergic reactions, including widespread rash, blisters, skin peeling, and effects on internal organs like kidneys and liver (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, DRESS, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis)
  • Liver inflammation, yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Poor kidney function or kidney problems
  • A type of lung disease where certain white blood cells (eosinophils) increase in the lungs
  • Acute confusion or delirium

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, any other ingredients, or other antibiotics like penicillin or cephalosporins.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have severe diarrhea before, during, or after treatment. Do not take anti-diarrhea medicine without talking to your doctor first.
  • Tell your doctor if you have low potassium levels in your blood.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems or are on dialysis. Your doctor may need to check your kidney function.
  • If you take blood thinners or experience unusual bleeding, tell your doctor immediately.

  • Using this medicine with another antibiotic called vancomycin can increase the risk of kidney damage.
  • Tell your doctor if you have seizures during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you think your infection is getting worse or if you develop a new infection.
  • Stop using this medicine and see a doctor right away if you get severe skin reactions like widespread rash, blisters, or skin peeling.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have fever, swollen glands, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, bruising, or a rash, as these could be signs of a serious immune condition.
  • If you are also taking certain other antibiotics (called aminoglycosides), this medicine must be given separately.
  • This medicine contains sodium (salt). Consider this if you are on a low-salt diet.
