How to Use

Dosage

The doctor or nurse will determine the correct dose for you or your child. For adults, it's typically 4 g/0.5 g every 6-8 hours. For children (2-12 years), the dose is based on body weight, given every 6 or 8 hours depending on the infection.

Method

This medicine is given as a drip (infusion) into a vein over about 30 minutes.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is typically 16 g of piperacillin and 2 g of tazobactam. A single dose for children should not exceed 4 g of piperacillin and 0.5 g of tazobactam.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Yeast infection
  • Headache, trouble sleeping
  • Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, indigestion
  • Rash, itching
  • Fever, reaction at the injection site
  • Changes in blood tests (e.g., liver enzymes, kidney function, or blood cell counts like platelets, red blood cells, or hemoglobin)
RARE
  • Serious changes in blood cells (e.g., severe decrease in white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets; or increased platelets)
  • Seizures
  • Low blood pressure, inflammation of veins
  • Red skin reactions, skin changes, hives
  • Joint and muscle pain, chills
  • Nosebleeds
  • Severe inflammation of the colon, mouth sores
  • Skin peeling over the whole body
  • Liver inflammation, yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Kidney problems or poor kidney function
  • Lung disease (with increased eosinophils)
  • Confusion or delirium
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing, or breathing difficulties

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, any other ingredients in this medicine, or to other penicillin-type antibiotics like cephalosporins or other beta-lactamase inhibitors.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop severe skin reactions, such as widespread rash, blisters, or skin peeling (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, DRESS, or AGEP).
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe or persistent diarrhea during or after treatment.
  • Inform your doctor if you have low potassium levels in your blood.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems or are on dialysis.

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking blood-thinning medicines (anticoagulants) or experience unexpected bleeding.
  • Taking this medicine with vancomycin can increase the risk of kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you experience seizures during treatment.
  • Seek medical attention immediately if you have symptoms like fever, swollen glands, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, bruising, or rash, as these could be signs of a serious immune condition (HLH).
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 2 years old.
