How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will determine your dose based on your age, weight, and infection. For adults and adolescents over 12, it's typically 4 g/0.5 g every 6-8 hours into a vein. For children aged 2-12, the dose depends on their weight and type of infection, given every 6 or 8 hours into a vein.

Method

This medicine is given as a drip into one of your veins over 30 minutes by a doctor or nurse.

Important

The highest single dose for children should not exceed 4 g/0.5 g. The doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, typically up to 18 g total for adults and adolescents.

Possible Side Effects

  • Diarrhea

  • Stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, or indigestion
  • Rash or itching
  • Fever or pain/redness at the injection site
  • Low numbers of certain blood cells (platelets, red blood cells, or some white blood cells)
  • Abnormal blood tests (for liver, kidney function, or blood clotting)
  • Low potassium or low blood sugar
  • Seizures
  • Low blood pressure, inflamed veins (tenderness or redness), or general skin redness
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Joint and muscle pain, chills
  • Nosebleeds, severe colon inflammation, or mouth sores
  • Severe skin peeling all over the body (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing, or breathing problems
  • Serious allergic reactions
  • Liver inflammation
  • New or worsening infection symptoms

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, or any similar antibiotics like penicillins or cephalosporins.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have or get severe diarrhea, and do not take anti-diarrhea medicine without talking to your doctor.
  • Inform your doctor if you have low potassium, kidney problems, liver problems, or are on dialysis.
  • Taking this medicine with vancomycin can increase the risk of kidney damage.
  • Tell your doctor if you take blood thinners or experience unexpected bleeding during treatment.

  • Contact your doctor if you think you have a new or worsening infection.
  • Stop taking this medicine and seek urgent medical help if you develop severe skin reactions like rashes with blisters, peeling skin, or fever.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have fever, swollen lymph nodes, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, bruising, or rash, as these could be signs of a serious immune system disorder.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 2 years old due to limited safety data.
