How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 0.2 mg once a day; your doctor may increase it to a maximum of 0.6 mg daily.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with water. Try to take them at the same time each day to help you remember.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 0.6 mg, usually split into two doses. No single dose should be more than 0.4 mg.

  • Dry mouth
  • Back pain
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Rash, itching
  • Trouble sleeping, sleepiness
  • Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, upset stomach
RARE
  • Neck pain
  • Nervousness
  • Fainting
  • Swelling (edema)
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Unusually slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Low blood pressure, including when standing up (orthostatic hypotension)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Physiotens if you are allergic to moxonidine or any other ingredient in the medicine.
  • Do not use if you have certain severe heart problems like a very slow heart rate (due to sick sinus syndrome or a second or third-degree heart block) or heart failure.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make the effects stronger.
  • Physiotens is not for children or adolescents under 18 years old.
  • This medicine is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Always talk to your doctor.

  • Stop taking Physiotens and get immediate medical help if you experience severe swelling of your face, lips, or mouth (angioedema), which is a rare but serious side effect.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include orthostatism, headache, drowsiness and sleep disorders. Potentiates the effect of CNS depressants. (updated 19.5.2025)
