How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the right glucose strength and how many bags to use daily.

Method

This medicine is given into your belly (peritoneal cavity) exactly as instructed by your healthcare team.

Important

Do not use more solution than your doctor has prescribed; exceeding the dose can cause stomach pain and breathing issues.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Changes in blood tests (high calcium, low potassium which can cause muscle problems or irregular heartbeat, high bicarbonate)
  • Weakness, tiredness
  • Swelling (fluid retention)
  • Weight gain
RARE
  • Reduced fluid removal during dialysis
  • Faintness, tiredness, or headache
  • Cloudy fluid drained from your belly, stomach pain
  • Bleeding inside your belly, pus, swelling or pain around where the catheter enters, or the catheter being blocked
  • Feeling sick (nausea), not wanting to eat, gas, thirst, dry mouth
  • Bloated or inflamed belly, shoulder pain, or a hernia in your belly area
  • Changes in blood tests (too much acid in blood, high carbon dioxide, high blood sugar, more white blood cells)
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Low blood pressure
  • Cough
  • Muscle or bone pain
  • Swelling in your face or throat
  • Rash
  • Infection around where the catheter exits, or the catheter being blocked

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to Physioneal 40 or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have an unfixable problem with your belly wall or cavity, or an unfixable issue that increases your risk of belly infections.
  • Do not use if your peritoneum (lining of your belly) is not working well due to severe scarring.
  • If you put unmixed solution into your belly, you might feel stomach pain. Drain it right away, use a new mixed bag, and tell your doctor immediately. If not drained, it can lead to confusion, drowsiness, and irregular heartbeat.
  • Contact your healthcare team immediately if you have stomach pain, fever, or cloudy/particle-filled drained fluid, as these can be signs of infection.

  • Be careful if you easily get severe lactic acidosis (too much acid in your blood).
  • If you have diabetes and use this medicine, your doctor will regularly check your blood sugar medication dose (like insulin).
  • If you have a corn allergy, stop the infusion immediately and drain the fluid from your belly, as it can cause a severe allergic reaction.
  • Incorrect use of clamps or flushing tubes in the wrong order can let air into your belly, causing pain or inflammation.
