How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how many bags to use each day and what glucose strength to use.

Method

This medicine is given into your belly (abdominal cavity). Always warm the bag to 37°C using a special warming plate. Do not use a microwave or water bath. Use clean hands and equipment as instructed by your healthcare team.

Important

Do not use more than your doctor prescribes. Using too much can cause bloating, stomach pain, and shortness of breath.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Increased calcium in blood
  • Low potassium in blood (can cause muscle weakness, twitches, or irregular heartbeat)
  • Increased bicarbonate in blood
  • Weakness, tiredness
  • Fluid buildup in the body (swelling)
  • Weight gain
RARE
  • Less fluid removed during dialysis
  • Fainting, dizziness, or headache
  • Cloudy fluid from the belly, stomach pains
  • Bleeding in the belly, pus, swelling or pain around the catheter, blocked catheter
  • Nausea, loss of appetite, digestive problems, gas, thirst, dry mouth
  • Bloated or inflamed belly, shoulder pains, hernia in the belly area
  • Lactic acidosis, increased carbon dioxide in blood, high blood sugar, increased white blood cells (eosinophilia)
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Low blood pressure
  • Cough
  • Muscle or bone pain
  • Swelling of the face or throat
  • Rash
  • Infection at the catheter site

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have an unfixable problem with your belly wall or cavity, or if you have an unfixable problem that increases your risk of belly infections.
  • Do not use if your abdominal lining (peritoneum) does not work well because of severe scarring.
  • Not recommended for children who need less than 1600 ml of solution.
  • If you get stomach pain, fever, or cloudy fluid coming out, contact your medical team right away. These could be signs of an infection (peritonitis).

  • Always mix the solution completely before use. Infusing unmixed solution can cause stomach pain, confusion, tiredness, and irregular heartbeat. If this happens, drain the fluid, use a new mixed bag, and tell your doctor.
  • If you have a corn allergy, stop the infusion right away and drain the fluid, as it can cause a severe allergic reaction.
  • This treatment may cause weakness, blurred vision, or dizziness. Do not drive or use machines if you experience these symptoms.
