How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the right glucose strength and how many bags you should use each day.

Method

This medicine is put into your belly (abdomen) through a special tube, exactly as your healthcare team has shown you; it should not be given into a vein.

Important

Do not use more solution than your doctor has prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Changes in your blood levels, such as high calcium, low potassium (which can cause muscle weakness, twitching, or an abnormal heart rhythm), and high bicarbonate.
  • Weakness, tiredness.
  • Fluid buildup in your body (swelling).
  • Weight gain.
RARE
  • Less fluid removed during dialysis.
  • Fainting, dizziness, headache.
  • Cloudy drainage fluid, belly pain.
  • Bleeding in your belly, pus, swelling, pain, or a blockage around your catheter.
  • Feeling sick (nausea), not wanting to eat, upset stomach, gas, thirst, dry mouth, bloated belly or inflammation, shoulder pain, hernia in the belly.
  • Changes in your blood levels, such as lactic acidosis, high carbon dioxide, high blood sugar, and high white blood cells.
  • Trouble sleeping.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Cough.
  • Muscle or bone pain.
  • Swelling of your face or throat.
  • Rash.
  • Infection around the catheter's exit site or blockage of the catheter.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to PHYSIONEAL 40 or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have an unfixable problem with your belly wall or cavity, or a condition that increases the risk of belly infections.
  • Do not use if your peritoneum (the lining of your belly) is badly scarred and not working well.
  • Contact your healthcare team right away if you have belly pain, fever, or if the drainage fluid is cloudy or has particles, as these can be signs of infection.
  • If you have a corn allergy and get a severe allergic reaction, stop the infusion immediately and drain the fluid from your belly.

  • Be aware of a rare but serious condition called Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis (EPS), which can be life-threatening.
  • Do not stop peritoneal dialysis treatment without your doctor's permission, as stopping it can be life-threatening.
  • If you put in too much solution, you might feel bloated, very full, or short of breath; contact your doctor right away.
