How to Use

Dosage

The usual single dose is 0.5–2 ml (54–216 mg).

Method

The medicine is given as a deep injection into a muscle every 2–4 weeks. It must not be given into a vein.

Important

The dose is given every 2–4 weeks, not daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Slight changes in blood count (increased or decreased white blood cells).
  • Menstrual problems, breast growth and tenderness, and breast enlargement in men.
  • Changes in appetite and weight.
  • Tiredness, especially at the start of treatment.
  • Sudden muscle movement problems.
  • Motor restlessness (e.g., inability to sit still).
  • Parkinson's-like symptoms, such as shaking and stiffness.
  • Involuntary movements and shaking around the mouth with long-term treatment.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Skin reactions (like hives, rash, itching, sensitivity to light).
RARE
  • Dry mouth.
  • Difficulty urinating.
  • Worsening of near vision.
  • Worsening of narrow-angle glaucoma.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Constipation.
  • Decreased potency.
  • Memory problems.
  • Dizziness due to low blood pressure when standing up.
  • Painful, prolonged erection and ejaculation problems.
  • Lowered seizure threshold.
  • Changes in glucose tolerance.
  • Syndrome with seizures, fever, muscle stiffness, and decreased consciousness (neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • Vision problems.
  • Heart rhythm disturbances.
  • Changes in sexual desire, delayed orgasm.
  • Severe changes in blood count.
  • Severe heart rhythm disturbances.
  • Cardiac arrest.
  • Increased hair growth.
  • Blood clots, especially in the leg veins (symptoms include swelling, pain, and redness in the legs), which can travel to the lungs, causing chest pain and breathing difficulties. Seek medical help immediately if these symptoms occur.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to perfenazine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a certain adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma), bone marrow problems, or brain damage.
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your family have a history of blood clots, or if you have liver, heart, or lung problems, diabetes, epilepsy, glaucoma, dementia, Parkinson's disease, or other heart conditions.
  • Avoid using this medicine with other medicines that can affect heart rhythm or salt balance.
  • This medicine may cause involuntary movements, especially after the injection.

  • This medicine contains propylparahydroxybenzoate and sesame oil, which can cause allergic reactions.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
