Dosage

Method

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Taking it regularly helps keep your symptoms under control.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Slight changes in blood cell counts (like an increase or decrease in white blood cells).
  • Menstrual problems, breast growth and tenderness (also in men).
  • Changes in appetite and weight.
  • Tiredness, especially at the start of treatment.
  • Sudden muscle movement problems.
  • Restlessness or inability to sit still.
  • Parkinson's-like symptoms, such as shaking and stiffness.
  • Uncontrolled movements and shaking around the mouth with long-term treatment.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Skin reactions (like hives, rash, itching, sensitivity to light).
RARE
  • Dry mouth.
  • Difficulty urinating.
  • Blurred near vision.
  • Worsening of narrow-angle glaucoma.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Constipation.
  • Weakened potency (erectile dysfunction).
  • Memory problems.
  • Dizziness when standing up due to low blood pressure.
  • Painful, prolonged erection and ejaculation problems.
  • Lowered seizure threshold.
  • Changes in glucose tolerance (blood sugar levels).
  • A severe condition with seizures, fever, muscle stiffness, and confusion (neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • Vision disturbances.
  • Heart rhythm disturbances.
  • Changes in sex drive, delayed orgasm.
  • Severe changes in blood cell counts (like a severe drop in white blood cells).
  • Severe heart rhythm disturbances.
  • Cardiac arrest.
  • Increased hair growth.
  • Blood clots, especially in the leg veins (symptoms include swelling, pain, and redness in the legs), which can travel to the lungs and cause chest pain and breathing difficulties. Seek medical help immediately if you experience these symptoms.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Peratsin if you are allergic to perfenazine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use Peratsin if you have a tumor on your adrenal gland (pheochromocytoma), bone marrow problems, or brain damage.
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Peratsin if you have liver, heart, or lung problems, diabetes, epilepsy, glaucoma, dementia, or Parkinson's disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you or a family member has a history of blood clots, as medicines like Peratsin can increase the risk of blood clots.
  • Inform your doctor if you have any heart disease, including a history of a heart rhythm problem called prolonged QT interval, or if your heart beats much slower than normal (bradycardia).

  • Tell your doctor if you have an enlarged prostate.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other antipsychotic medicines or if another antipsychotic medicine has not worked well for you.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe or long-lasting diarrhea, vomiting, or if you have been fasting for a long time.
  • This medicine can affect your ability to drive or use machines, so be careful with activities that need sharp focus.
  • Do not start any new medicine without first checking with your doctor or pharmacist if it can be used with Peratsin.
  • Do not stop taking Peratsin suddenly. Your dose should be gradually reduced as instructed by your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
