Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Mild changes in blood counts (e.g., higher or lower white blood cells).
  • Menstrual problems, breast enlargement and tenderness in women, and breast enlargement in men.
  • Changes in appetite and weight.
  • Tiredness, especially at the start of treatment.
  • Sudden muscle movement problems.
  • Restlessness (e.g., feeling like you can't sit still).
  • Symptoms like Parkinson's disease, such as shaking and stiffness.
  • Uncontrolled movements and shaking around the mouth with long-term treatment.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Skin reactions (e.g., hives, rash, itching, sensitivity to light).
RARE
  • Dry mouth.
  • Difficulty urinating.
  • Blurred near vision.
  • Worsening of narrow-angle glaucoma.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Constipation.
  • Erectile dysfunction (impotence).
  • Memory problems.
  • Dizziness when standing up due to low blood pressure.
  • Painful, prolonged erection and ejaculation problems.
  • Lowered seizure threshold.
  • Changes in sugar tolerance (blood sugar levels).
  • A severe reaction called neuroleptic malignant syndrome, with symptoms like seizures, fever, muscle stiffness, and confusion.
  • Vision problems.
  • Heart rhythm problems.
  • Changes in sex drive and delayed orgasm.
  • Severe changes in blood counts (e.g., severe lack of white blood cells or severe anemia).
  • Severe heart rhythm problems.
  • Cardiac arrest.
  • Increased hair growth.
  • Blood clots, especially in the leg veins (swelling, pain, redness in legs). These can travel to the lungs, causing chest pain and breathing difficulties. Seek medical help immediately if you have these symptoms.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to perfenazine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a tumor on your adrenal gland (pheochromocytoma), bone marrow problems, or brain damage.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver, heart, or lung failure, diabetes, epilepsy, glaucoma, dementia, or Parkinson's disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family have a history of blood clots, as this type of medicine can cause them.
  • Tell your doctor if you have any heart problems.

  • Tell your doctor if you or your family have a history of prolonged QT interval, which can lead to heart rhythm problems.
  • Tell your doctor if your heart beats much slower than usual (bradycardia).
  • Tell your doctor if you have an enlarged prostate.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other antipsychotic medicines or if another antipsychotic medicine has not suited you.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe or long-lasting diarrhea, vomiting, or if you are on a long fast.
  • This medicine may make you tired or affect your ability to drive or use machines safely. Be careful until you know how it affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
