How to Use

Dosage

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Slight changes in blood count (more or fewer white blood cells).
  • Menstrual problems, breast growth and tenderness, and enlarged breasts in men.
  • Changes in appetite and weight.
  • Tiredness, especially at the start of treatment.
  • Sudden muscle movement problems.
  • Restlessness (e.g., inability to sit still).
  • Symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease, like trembling and stiffness.
  • Involuntary movements and trembling around the mouth with long-term treatment.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Skin problems (such as hives, rash, itching, sensitivity to light, or other skin issues).
RARE
  • Dry mouth.
  • Difficulty urinating.
  • Worsening of close-up vision.
  • Worsening of narrow-angle glaucoma.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Constipation.
  • Decreased potency.
  • Memory problems.
  • Dizziness when standing up due to a drop in blood pressure.
  • Painful, prolonged erection and ejaculation problems.
  • Lowered seizure threshold.
  • Changes in sugar tolerance.
  • A severe reaction called neuroleptic malignant syndrome, with seizures, fever, muscle stiffness, and confusion.
  • Vision problems.
  • Heart rhythm problems.
  • Changes in sexual desire, delayed orgasm.
  • Severe changes in blood count (very low white blood cells, aplastic anemia).
  • Severe heart rhythm problems.
  • Cardiac arrest.
  • Increased body hair.
  • Blood clots, especially in leg veins (symptoms include swelling, pain, and redness in the legs), which can travel to the lungs, causing chest pain and breathing difficulties. Seek immediate medical help if you notice these symptoms.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Peratsin if you are allergic to perfenazin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a pheochromocytoma (a tumor in the adrenal gland), bone marrow problems, or brain damage.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have liver, heart, or lung problems, diabetes, epilepsy, glaucoma, dementia, or Parkinson's disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family has a history of blood clots, as this type of medicine can cause them.
  • Tell your doctor if you have any heart disease.

  • Avoid taking Peratsin with medicines that affect heart rhythm (QT interval) or the body's salt balance.
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
