How to Use

Dosage

The dose is chosen by your doctor. It usually starts at 2-4 grams per day, taken once or split into several doses.

Method

Swallow the granules whole. You can empty the sachet onto your tongue and wash it down with water or juice. Do not chew or crush the granules. You can also mix them with yogurt and swallow immediately.

Important

Do not take more than 4 grams per day.

  • dizziness
  • heart problems (like inflammation of the heart)

  • changes in blood, like anemia (low red blood cells)
  • tingling or numbness in hands and feet
  • allergic reactions in lungs, causing shortness of breath or cough
  • problems with liver or kidneys
  • temporary hair loss
  • muscle and joint pain
  • kidney stones and related pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Pentasa if you are allergic to mesalazine, salicylates, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have or have had liver or kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to sulfasalazine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a lung disease, especially asthma.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines containing azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine, or thioguanine.

  • Stop taking Pentasa and see a doctor right away if you get cramps, stomach pain, fever, bad headache, rash, or severe skin problems like blisters or peeling skin.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. Pentasa can cause kidney stones. Contact your doctor if you have pain in your side or blood in your urine.
  • See a doctor right away if you have a very bad headache, problems with your vision, or ringing in your ears.
