How to Use

Dosage

Adults: 1 suppository 1-2 times daily, or as directed by your doctor.

Method

Insert the suppository into your rectum. It's recommended to go to the toilet before use. Push the suppository in until you feel resistance, then continue until the resistance goes away. If it comes out within 10 minutes, you can insert a new one. If insertion feels uncomfortable, moisten the suppository with water or use petroleum jelly.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2 suppositories, or as instructed by your doctor.

  • Dizziness
  • Inflammation of the heart muscle or sac around the heart
  • Inflammation of the pancreas
  • Increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., anemia)
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., rash)
  • Fever caused by the medicine
  • Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
  • Allergic lung inflammation or reactions (e.g., shortness of breath, cough)
  • Inflammation of the entire large intestine
  • Liver and kidney problems
  • Temporary hair loss
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Red rash
  • Discolored urine
  • Temporary decrease in sperm count
  • Kidney stones and related kidney pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to mesalazine, salicylates (like aspirin), or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe liver or kidney disease, or if your liver or kidneys are not working well.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to sulfasalazine.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines that can affect your kidneys.
  • Tell your doctor if you have lung disease, especially asthma.

  • Tell your doctor if you are being treated with medicines like azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine, or thioguanine.
  • Stop using Pentasa and see a doctor right away if you get cramps, stomach pain, fever, bad headache, or a rash.
  • Kidney stones can form. Drink enough water during treatment. Symptoms can include pain in your side or blood in your urine.
  • Stop using Pentasa and see a doctor right away if you develop severe skin reactions like red spots, peeling skin, blisters, or sores in your mouth, eyes, or genitals, especially if accompanied by fever.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe or recurring headaches, vision problems, or ringing in your ears during treatment.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Remember blood tests to monitor safety. (updated 20.5.2024)
