How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your weight and the type of infection you have.

Method

It is given as an injection into a muscle, an infusion into a vein, or inhaled using a special device (nebuliser).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Kidney problems (changes in kidney function, swelling in ankles, less urine, lower back pain).
  • High levels of waste products in the blood.
  • Blood in urine.
  • Injection site reactions (swelling, pain, hardening of tissue, pus, muscle tissue death).
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia).
  • Low white blood cell count (leukopenia), leading to unexplained infection or fever.
  • Sudden, brief loss of consciousness, dizziness.
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), with symptoms like nervousness, shaking, or sweating.
  • High blood pressure, circulation problems, feeling hot.
  • Nausea, vomiting, taste changes.
  • Changes in liver function (seen in blood tests).
  • Rash.
  • Low magnesium levels in blood.
  • High potassium levels in blood.
  • High blood sugar, diabetes (long-lasting).
  • Cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, muscle spasms in airways (inhalation).
  • Taste changes, nausea (inhalation).
RARE
  • Allergic reaction (rash, difficulty swallowing or breathing, swelling of lips, face, throat, or tongue).
  • Severe skin reactions (blisters, bleeding, flu-like symptoms, fever).
  • Pancreatitis (severe stomach pain that may spread to your back).
  • Abnormal or irregular heartbeat.
  • Easy bruising or bleeding (due to low platelet count).
  • Low calcium levels in blood.
  • Low blood pressure (dizziness, faintness, fainting).
  • Abnormal electrical activity of the heart affecting heart rhythm.
  • Atypical heart rhythm (torsades de pointes).
  • Slow heartbeat.
  • Numbness or tingling in arms and legs, reduced feeling around the mouth and face.
  • Muscle tissue breakdown (rhabdomyolysis).
  • Lung inflammation due to allergic reactions (inhalation).
  • Very low blood sugar (inhalation).
  • Dizziness (inhalation).
  • Slow heartbeat (inhalation).
  • Eye irritation (pink eye) if the spray gets into the eyes (inhalation).
  • Very low blood pressure (inhalation).
  • Air trapped in the chest after previous pneumonia (inhalation).
  • Coughing up blood (inhalation).
  • Increased saliva, heartburn, vomiting (inhalation).
  • Rash, hives, bumpy rash (inhalation).
  • Kidney problems (inhalation).
  • Fever, weakness (tiredness), reduced appetite (inhalation).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to pentamidine diisethionate.
  • Tell your doctor if you have high or low blood pressure.
  • Tell your doctor if you have high or low blood sugar levels.
  • Tell your doctor if you have low white blood cell or platelet counts.
  • Tell your doctor if you have anemia (low red blood cell count).
