How to Use

Dosage

Adults and adolescents should take 200-400 mg three times daily; children over 5 years should take 200 mg three times daily.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with at least half a glass of liquid, while sitting or standing, preferably with food to avoid stomach upset.

Important

Do not exceed the recommended dose of 400 mg three times a day for adults/adolescents, or 200 mg three times a day for children over 5.

  • Abnormal liver function
  • Rash
  • Hives

  • Reduced number of white blood cells (leukocytes)
  • Drug-induced fever
  • Candida superinfection (yeast infection)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to pivmecillinam, penicillin, cephalosporin antibiotics, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a history of severe skin rash, peeling skin, blisters, or mouth sores after using Penomax or other similar antibiotics.
  • Do not use if you have a narrowing or blockage in your esophagus or digestive tract.
  • Do not use if you have a genetic metabolic disorder that reduces carnitine in your body or causes too much acid in your blood or urine.
  • Stop taking Penomax and seek immediate medical help if you develop severe skin reactions like widespread rash, blisters, peeling skin, or mouth sores, sometimes with fever.

  • Stop taking Penomax and seek immediate medical help if you experience severe allergic reactions such as sudden rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing/swallowing.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe diarrhea with stomach pain and fever during Penomax treatment, as this could be a serious bowel inflammation.
  • Inform your doctor if you take Penomax just before childbirth, as it might affect newborn screening tests.
  • Consult your doctor before taking Penomax if you have porphyria (a rare metabolic disorder), carnitine deficiency, uncontrolled diabetes, or low muscle mass.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. May potentiate the effect of methotrexate. (updated 6.11.2023)
