How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide your dose based on your age, weight, and kidney function.

Method

Penicryl is given as an injection into a muscle or a vein, or as a drip into a vein by a doctor or nurse.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults can be up to 50 million IU, as determined by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Rash
  • Inflammation of a vein where the injection was given
RARE
  • Hives
  • Itching
  • Red skin inflammation (erythema)
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat (severe allergic reaction)
  • Difficulty breathing or chest tightness
  • Fever, joint pain, and swollen glands (lymph nodes) (may be signs of a severe allergic reaction)
  • Severe skin rashes, including those with flu-like symptoms, blisters, or peeling skin
  • Flu-like symptoms, headache, muscle pain, and rash (Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction, especially when treating Lyme disease)
  • Too many or too few white blood cells (increasing infection risk)
  • Too few red blood cells (anemia)
  • Too few platelets (increasing bleeding risk)
  • Diarrhea, including severe watery diarrhea with blood and mucus, stomach pain, and fever
  • Kidney problems
  • Fungal infections in the mouth or stomach
  • Muscle twitching
  • Seizures
  • Confusion, loss of consciousness, or coma
  • Neurological problems
  • Abnormal heartbeat (due to high potassium levels)
  • Weakness, dizziness, fainting (due to high potassium levels)
  • Numbness or tingling (due to high potassium levels)
  • Shortness of breath (due to high potassium levels)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Penicryl if you are allergic to benzylpenicillin or other penicillin-type medicines.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to penicillin or similar antibiotics (like cephalosporins).
  • Inform your doctor if you have kidney or heart problems, diarrhea, or are on a special diet that limits potassium.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop a severe skin rash with flu-like symptoms, blisters, or peeling skin while taking this medicine.
  • Long-term or high-dose use may lead to new infections or serious electrolyte imbalances (like too much potassium in the blood).
