Pedismof Preterm is a medicine given as a drip to provide proper nutrition for newborn babies, including those born early, when they cannot eat enough by mouth.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the right dose based on your baby's weight and health. For preterm babies, it's typically 65-125 ml/kg per day. For full-term newborns, it's typically 51-107 ml/kg per day.

Method

This medicine is given as a continuous drip (infusion) into a large vein in your baby's arm or chest, usually over 20-24 hours.

Important

The maximum daily dose for preterm babies is 125 ml/kg. For full-term newborns, the maximum daily dose is 107 ml/kg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • High levels of certain fats (triglycerides) in the blood, leading to a condition called hypertriglyceridemia.
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia), which may need monitoring or treatment.
RARE
  • High fat levels (lipids) in the blood, leading to a condition called hyperlipidemia.
  • A condition where bile (a fluid made by the liver) cannot flow properly to the intestine (cholestasis).
  • Fever.
  • High bilirubin levels in the blood (hyperbilirubinemia), which can cause yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).
  • Sudden and unexpected worsening of the patient's condition.
  • Fat buildup in the liver (hepatomegaly).
  • Decreased liver function.
  • Decrease in red blood cells (anemia), which can cause pale skin, weakness, or breathing difficulties.
  • Low white blood cell count (leukopenia), which can increase the risk of infection.
  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia), which can increase the risk of bruising and/or bleeding.
  • Blood clotting disorders.
  • Coma requiring hospitalisation.
  • Nausea, vomiting, chills, and sweating (if too much amino acids are given).
  • Amino acid infusion can also increase body temperature (if too much amino acids are given).
  • High blood sugar and sugar in urine (hyperglycemia and glucosuria), which can lead to hyperosmolar syndrome (if too much glucose is given).

Important Warnings

  • Do not give if your child is allergic to eggs, fish, soy, peanuts, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not give if your child has inborn problems with how their body uses and processes amino acids.
  • Do not give if your child has very high blood sugar (hyperglycemia).
  • Do not give if your child has too much fat in their blood (hyperlipidemia or hypertriglyceridemia), especially if all three parts of the bag are mixed.
  • Talk to a doctor before use if your child has kidney, liver, or heart problems, diabetes, a severe infection, or fluid in their lungs.

  • If your child gets a fever, rash, swelling, difficulty breathing, chills, sweating, nausea, or vomiting during the drip, tell healthcare staff immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction or too much medicine.
