How to Use

Dosage

Your child's doctor will decide the dose based on their weight and health.

Method

This medicine is given as a drip into a large vein in your child's chest.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 140 ml/kg for premature babies, 120 ml/kg for full-term newborns, and 100 ml/kg/day for children up to 2 years old.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • High levels of certain fats (triglycerides) in the blood.
  • High blood sugar, which might need checking or treatment.
RARE
  • High levels of fats (lipids) in the blood.
  • A problem where bile (a fluid from the liver) cannot flow well to the gut.
  • Fever.
  • High bilirubin in the blood, making skin and eyes yellow (jaundice).
  • Sudden and unexpected worsening of health.
  • Fat buildup in the liver.
  • Liver not working as well.
  • Too few red blood cells (anemia), causing pale skin, weakness, or shortness of breath.
  • Too few white blood cells, increasing infection risk.
  • Too few platelets, increasing bruising or bleeding risk.
  • Problems with blood clotting.
  • Coma (deep unconsciousness) requiring hospital care.
  • Feeling sick to your stomach.
  • Throwing up.
  • Feeling cold and shivering.
  • Sweating.
  • Higher body temperature.
  • Too much sugar in the blood and urine, which can lead to a serious condition called hyperosmolar syndrome.

Important Warnings

  • Do not give if your child is allergic to eggs, fish, soy, peanuts, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not give if your child has a problem processing amino acids (protein building blocks).
  • Do not give if your child has very high blood sugar or too many salts in their blood.
  • For newborns (under 28 days old), do not give this medicine with the antibiotic ceftriaxone, as it can form harmful particles in the blood.
  • Do not give if your child has too much fat (lipids or triglycerides) in their blood.

  • Tell the doctor if your child has kidney, liver, or heart problems, diabetes, a severe infection, or fluid in the lungs.
  • If your child gets fever, rash, swelling, trouble breathing, chills, sweating, nausea, or vomiting during the drip, tell the nurse or doctor right away.
