How to Use

Dosage

For adults, typical doses range from 10 mg to 40 mg once daily, depending on your condition. For children, the dose is based on weight, typically 1 mg/kg once daily, up to 10 mg (for 5-10 kg) or 10-20 mg once daily (for 10-20 kg). Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth, usually in the morning, on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before your first meal. Use the special measuring device provided to ensure the correct dose. You can drink a glass of water after taking it. It can also be given through an NG or PEG tube. For infants, a small amount of milk (10-15 ml) can be used to facilitate administration.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose for this 2 mg/ml oral suspension is 15 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach and gut problems like diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, and gas
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Benign stomach polyps (growths in the stomach that are not cancerous)
RARE
  • Swelling of the feet and ankles
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Dizziness, tingling, numbness, and feeling sleepy
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Changes in blood tests that show how your liver is working
  • Rash, hives, and itchy skin
  • General feeling of unwellness and lack of energy
  • Changes in blood cells (low white blood cells or platelets), which can lead to weakness, bruising, or more infections
  • Allergic reactions, sometimes very severe, including swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat, fever, and wheezing
  • Low sodium levels in the blood, which can cause weakness, nausea (feeling sick), vomiting, and seizures
  • Feeling agitated, confused, or depressed
  • Changes in taste
  • Vision problems, such as blurred vision
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath (bronchospasm)
  • Dry mouth
  • Inflammation of the mouth
  • Oral thrush (a yeast infection in the mouth) that can affect the gut
  • Liver problems, including jaundice (yellow skin), dark urine, and tiredness
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Rash caused by sunlight
  • Joint pain (arthralgia) or muscle pain (myalgia)
  • Severe kidney problems (interstitial nephritis)
  • Increased sweating
  • Changes in blood counts, such as agranulocytosis (a lack of white blood cells)
  • Aggression
  • Hallucinations (seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there)
  • Severe liver problems that can lead to liver failure or brain inflammation
  • Sudden severe rash, blistering, or peeling skin. This skin reaction may also be accompanied by fever and joint pain (erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Muscle weakness
  • Enlarged breasts in men
  • Gut inflammation that causes diarrhea
  • Low magnesium in the blood (symptoms include tiredness, muscle twitching, confusion, convulsions, dizziness, and a fast heart rate)
  • Rash with possible joint pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to omeprazole or any other ingredients in this medicine, or to other proton pump inhibitor medicines.
  • Do not take if you are taking a medicine containing nelfinavir (used for HIV infection).
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you develop a severe skin rash with blisters or peeling skin, especially around the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, and genitals, or if you have a widespread rash with fever and swollen glands.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, stomach pain, vomiting food or blood, black stools, severe or persistent diarrhea, severe liver problems, a skin reaction from a similar medicine, or are having a specific blood test (Chromogranin A).
  • This medicine may slightly increase the risk of hip, wrist, or spine fractures, especially with long-term use (over a year) or if you have osteoporosis or take corticosteroids.

  • If you develop a rash, especially in areas exposed to sunlight, tell your doctor as soon as possible.
  • Taking this medicine may cause kidney inflammation. Symptoms can include reduced urine, blood in urine, fever, rash, and joint stiffness. Tell your doctor if you experience these.
  • Do not give this medicine to children younger than 1 month old.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
