How to Use

Dosage

The typical starting dose for adults is 20 mg once daily, but your doctor may adjust this based on your condition.

Method

Take the tablets whole with a glass of water in the morning, preferably with food, to reduce side effects. Do not chew the tablets.

  • Fast heart rate
  • Temporary changes in blood pressure, making you feel dizzy or faint when standing up quickly.
  • Dilated pupils (large pupils)
  • Skin rash, itching
  • Difficulty urinating (urinating too little) or involuntary urination (urinating too much).
  • Changes in blood sugar levels if you have diabetes.
  • Decrease in the number of white blood cells.
  • Low sodium levels in the blood.
  • Manic reactions (feeling overly excited or energetic).
  • Feeling unreal or detached from yourself.
  • Panic attacks.
  • Restlessness and an inability to sit or stand still.
  • Seizures (convulsions).
  • Restless legs syndrome (uncomfortable urge to move legs).
  • Slow heart rate.
  • Increased levels of liver enzymes (shown in blood tests).
  • Joint pain, muscle pain.
  • High prolactin hormone levels in blood (may cause breast discharge).
  • Menstrual problems (e.g., heavy, irregular, or missed periods; bleeding between periods).

Important Warnings

  • This medicine is generally not for children or teenagers under 18 because it can increase risks like suicidal thoughts and hostile behavior.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor or go to a hospital immediately.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are currently taking or have recently taken (within the last two weeks) MAO inhibitors (another type of antidepressant).
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor will help you reduce the dose slowly.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make your symptoms or side effects worse.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Serotonergic. Consider another SSRI antidepressant for primary treatment. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls.
