How to Use

Dosage

Initially one 100 mg capsule daily; after one week, your doctor may increase the dose to two 100 mg capsules per day (one capsule twice daily).

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water after a meal, preferably in the morning. If taking two doses per day, the second dose should be taken in the afternoon after a meal.

Important

The maximum daily maintenance dose is 100 mg (one capsule) for elderly patients without kidney impairment.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fluid retention in legs
  • Impaired attention
  • Bluish or reddish net-like discoloration of the skin, especially on arms and legs (livedo reticularis)
RARE
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there)
  • Depression (feeling sad)
  • Anxiety
  • Speech difficulties (stuttering)
  • Coordination problems (difficulty moving the body precisely)
  • Severe confusion or disorientation
  • Severe psychosis (mental illness affecting behavior)
  • Uncontrolled movements (dyskinesia)
  • Seizures
  • Corneal changes (damage to the front of the eye), fluid retention in the cornea, decreased vision
  • Rash
  • Urinary retention (difficulty emptying the bladder)
  • Urinary incontinence (inability to control urination)
  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (a serious condition with rigid muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, reduced consciousness)
  • Heart failure
  • Increased susceptibility to infections due to reduced white blood cells (leukopenia), with symptoms like fever, sore throat, mouth sores
  • Restlessness (agitation)
  • Nervousness
  • Elevated mood (euphoria)
  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness (brief loss of consciousness)
  • Headache
  • Insomnia
  • Nightmares
  • Drowsiness (lethargy)
  • Blurred vision
  • Palpitations (irregular heartbeat)
  • Drop in blood pressure when standing up (orthostatic hypotension), sometimes with dizziness
  • Dry mouth

  • Constipation (bowel obstruction)
  • Tremor (shaking)

  • Increased liver enzymes (in blood tests)
  • Photosensitivity (skin reacts strongly to sun)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to amantadine hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have epilepsy that is not properly treated.
  • Do not take if you have a severe mental illness (psychosis) where your behavior and actions are impaired.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have epilepsy.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had thoughts of suicide or self-harm.

  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly; always talk to your doctor first.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine.
  • Do not drive or use machines if the medicine makes you dizzy, blurs your vision, or causes confusion.
