How to Use

Dosage

One 10 mg or 20 mg tablet once a day, depending on your condition.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water in the morning before food. Do not chew or crush them.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, which can be up to 60 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Infections
  • Sleeplessness
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Cough, runny nose or sore throat
  • Stomach or bowel problems (e.g., pain, diarrhea, gas, nausea, vomiting, constipation)
  • Aches or back pain
  • Weakness or flu-like symptoms
  • Benign stomach polyps
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., facial swelling, difficulty breathing, fainting) or serious skin reactions (e.g., blisters or sores in the mouth).
  • Frequent infections, such as sore throat or high fever, or sores in the mouth or throat.
  • Easy bruising or tendency to bleed.
  • Nervousness or drowsiness
  • Bronchitis or sinusitis
  • Dry mouth, indigestion or belching
  • Rash or skin redness
  • Muscle, bone, or joint pain
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Chest pain, chills, or fever
  • Changes in liver function (seen in blood tests)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Depression
  • Vision or taste disturbances
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
  • Kidney problems
  • Weight gain
  • Changes in blood counts (e.g., decrease in white blood cells or platelets)
  • Swollen breasts in men
  • Fluid retention
  • Bowel inflammation causing diarrhea
  • Low sodium or magnesium levels in blood (may cause tiredness, muscle cramps, confusion)
  • Brain disease (encephalopathy) in patients with prior liver problems.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Pariet if you are allergic to rabeprazole sodium or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use Pariet if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  • Pariet should not be given to children.
  • Stop taking Pariet and contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe diarrhea with fever or stomach pain.
  • Pariet may cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy.

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines, such as HIV medicines (e.g., atazanavir), anti-fungal medicines (e.g., ketoconazole), or cancer medicines (e.g., methotrexate).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have a history of liver or blood problems.
  • Long-term use may impair vitamin B12 absorption.
  • Long-term use may slightly increase the risk of hip, wrist, or spine fractures.
  • Talk to your doctor if you experience symptoms of kidney inflammation, such as decreased urine output or blood in urine, fever, rash, or joint stiffness.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
