How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your starting dose based on your blood tests and may adjust it over time.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection directly into the tube used for your dialysis treatment, by a doctor or nurse.

Important

You will receive this medicine no more than every other day, and a maximum of three times per week. The maximum dose used in studies was 40 micrograms.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Unusual taste in mouth
  • Itchy skin
  • Low parathyroid hormone levels in blood
  • High calcium levels in blood, which can cause nausea, vomiting, constipation, or confusion
  • High phosphate levels in blood, which may increase the risk of bone fractures (usually no symptoms)
RARE
  • Serious infections (blood infection, lung infection, sore throat, flu, vaginal infection)
  • Changes in blood cells (low red cells making you tired/pale, low white cells increasing infection risk, swollen glands)
  • Hormone problems (high parathyroid hormone, low calcium)
  • Brain and nerve issues (confusion, personality changes, anxiety, trouble sleeping, feeling sleepy, coma, stroke, fainting, muscle twitching, numbness or tingling, dizziness)
  • Eye and ear problems (high eye pressure, red/itchy eyes, earache)
  • Heart problems (heart attack, fast or uneven heartbeat, low or high blood pressure)
  • Breathing problems (fluid in lungs, asthma, wheezing, shortness of breath, nosebleeds, cough)
  • Stomach and gut issues (bleeding from rectum, gut swelling, diarrhea, stomach pain, trouble swallowing, constipation, nausea, throwing up, dry mouth, not feeling hungry)
  • Skin and hair changes (itchy rash with bumps, hair loss, more body hair, sweating a lot)
  • Muscle and joint pain (joint pain, stiff joints, back pain, muscle twitches, muscle pain)
  • Other problems (chest pain, trouble getting an erection, walking strangely, swelling in ankles/feet/legs, pain where injection was given, fever, feeling very tired or weak, generally unwell, feeling thirsty, blood taking longer to clot, abnormal liver tests, weight loss, breast cancer)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to paricalcitol or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not use if you have very high levels of calcium or vitamin D in your blood.
  • Discuss your diet with your doctor, especially regarding phosphate intake, as you may need phosphate-binding medicines.
  • Your doctor will regularly check your blood with tests to monitor your treatment.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you have trouble breathing, swelling of your face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat, or a widespread itchy rash.

  • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, as this medicine is generally not recommended.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, so do not drive or operate machinery if you feel dizzy.
