How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will determine the correct dose based on your weight. For adults over 50 kg, a typical dose is 1 gram (100 ml), given as a drip over 15 minutes. Doses should be given at least 4 hours apart.

Method

This medicine is given into a vein as a drip (infusion) by a doctor or nurse.

Important

For most adults, the maximum daily dose is 4 grams. For adults with certain liver conditions or weighing less than 50 kg, the maximum is 3 grams. Do not take more than 4 doses in 24 hours.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain and burning at the injection site.
RARE
  • Changes in blood tests, like higher liver enzyme levels.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Feeling unwell.
  • Fewer certain blood cells, which can cause bleeding (nosebleeds, gum bleeding) or make you more prone to infections.
  • Allergic reactions, from mild rash to severe reactions like swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts, wheezing, or difficulty breathing.
  • Severe skin reactions.
  • Rare cases of blood and fluid balance problems (metabolic acidosis) when paracetamol is used with flucloxacillin, especially in people with risk factors.
  • Fast heartbeat.
  • Skin redness, flushing, itching.
  • A serious condition where the blood becomes too acidic (metabolic acidosis) in severely ill patients using paracetamol.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to paracetamol or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not use other medicines containing paracetamol at the same time to avoid overdose.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, alcoholism, are severely malnourished, are dehydrated, or are taking flucloxacillin (an antibiotic).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. The recommended maximum dose for long-term use is 2 grams per day. Can be used concurrently with warfarin only if INR values are monitored. Consider paracetamol in OTC drugs and combination products. Risk of poisoning with daily doses over 4 grams. (updated 14.4.2025)
