How to Use

Dosage

For stomach ulcers and reflux: 40 mg (one vial) daily. For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: 80 mg (two vials) daily.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you a daily injection into a vein over 2-15 minutes.

Important

Your doctor may increase the dose up to 160 mg daily if needed. If you have severe liver problems, the maximum dose is 20 mg daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation or blood clot where the injection was given. Benign growths in the stomach (polyps).
RARE
  • Headache, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, gas, constipation, dry mouth.
  • Skin rash, itching, hives, feeling weak or tired, trouble sleeping.
  • Bone fractures (hip, wrist, spine), joint pain, muscle pain.
  • Changes in taste, blurred vision, weight changes, fever, swelling in arms/legs.
  • Depression, enlarged breasts in men.
  • Confusion, disorientation, hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there).
  • Tingling, prickling, burning sensation, or numbness in skin.
  • Severe allergic reactions with swelling of the face, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, fast heartbeat, or heavy sweating.
  • Severe skin reactions such as blisters, peeling skin, sores in mouth/eyes/genitals, or a widespread rash with fever.
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice), fever, rash, enlarged kidneys with painful urination or back pain, which could lead to kidney problems.
  • Abnormal blood test results: increased liver enzymes, bilirubin, or blood fat levels; low levels of white or red blood cells, or platelets (which can cause easier bleeding/infections); low sodium, magnesium, calcium, or potassium in the blood.
  • Inflammation of the colon causing persistent watery diarrhea.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to pantoprazole or similar medicines (proton pump inhibitors).
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had severe liver problems. Your doctor will check your liver.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, especially HIV medicines (like atazanavir) or methotrexate.
  • Long-term use (over one year) may slightly increase the risk of bone fractures. Tell your doctor if you have weak bones (osteoporosis) or are at risk.
  • If you use this medicine for more than three months, your blood magnesium levels may become low. This can cause tiredness, muscle cramps, or a fast heartbeat. Your doctor may check your magnesium.

  • Seek immediate medical help if you get severe skin reactions like blisters, peeling skin, or a rash (especially in sun-exposed areas) with fever or flu-like symptoms.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you notice unexplained weight loss, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, trouble swallowing, severe diarrhea, paleness, weakness, chest or stomach pain. These can be signs of other serious health issues.
  • This medicine is not for children under 18 years old.
