How to Use

Dosage

One vial (40 mg pantoprazole) daily for most conditions.

Method

A nurse or doctor will give you the daily dose as an injection into a vein over 2-15 minutes.

Important

Up to two vials (80 mg pantoprazole) daily for specific conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of the vein wall and blood clot at the injection site.
  • Benign stomach polyps.
RARE
  • Headache, dizziness.
  • Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating and gas, constipation, dry mouth, stomach pain and discomfort.
  • Rash, skin eruption, itching.
  • Feeling weak, tired or generally unwell, sleep disorders.
  • Hip, wrist or spine fracture.
  • Distorted or complete loss of taste, vision disorders like blurred vision.
  • Hives, joint pain, muscle pain, weight changes, increased body temperature, high fever.
  • Swelling of limbs (peripheral edema), allergic reactions, depression, breast enlargement in men.
  • Disorientation (confusion about time and place).
  • Hallucinations, confusion (especially if you've had these symptoms before).
  • Tingling, prickling, burning sensation or numbness, rash and possible associated joint pain.
  • Inflammation of the large intestine causing persistent watery diarrhea.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels.
  • Increased bilirubin levels, increased blood fat levels, significant decrease in circulating granulocytes (white blood cells) combined with high fever.
  • Decreased number of platelets, which may cause easier bleeding or bruising; decreased number of white blood cells, which may cause easier infections; simultaneous decrease in red and white blood cells and platelets.
  • Lower than normal levels of sodium, magnesium, calcium or potassium in the blood.
  • Yellowing of skin and whites of eyes (severe liver damage), fever, rash, and enlarged kidneys (sometimes with painful urination and lower back pain, severe kidney inflammation) which may lead to kidney failure.
  • Swelling of the tongue and/or throat, difficulty swallowing, hives, breathing problems, allergic swelling of the face, severe dizziness with a very fast heartbeat and heavy sweating.
  • Skin blisters and rapid worsening of general condition, skin and mucous membrane changes (including bleeding) in eyes, nose, mouth/lips or genitals, skin sensitivity/rash especially in sun-exposed areas. May also include joint pain, flu-like symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to pantoprazole, any other ingredient in this medicine, or other proton pump inhibitors.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe liver problems; your doctor will monitor your liver enzymes and stop treatment if levels increase.
  • If you are taking HIV protease inhibitors like atazanavir (for HIV infection), tell your doctor.
  • Long-term use (over a year) may slightly increase your risk of hip, wrist, or spine fractures.
  • If you use this medicine for more than three months, your blood magnesium levels might drop. Low magnesium can cause fatigue, muscle twitching, confusion, seizures, dizziness, and fast heart rate. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms.

  • If you develop a rash, especially in sun-exposed areas, tell your doctor as soon as possible, as treatment may need to be stopped.
  • Severe skin reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, DRESS syndrome) have been reported. Stop using pantoprazole and seek immediate medical help if you notice any symptoms of these severe skin reactions.
  • Long-term use may reduce vitamin B12 absorption. Contact your doctor if you experience extreme tiredness, tingling, sore or red tongue, mouth ulcers, muscle weakness, vision problems, memory problems, confusion, or depression.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you notice unintentional weight loss, repeated vomiting, difficulty or pain when swallowing, vomiting blood (looks like coffee grounds), pale skin or weakness (anemia), blood in stools (black or tar-like), chest pain, stomach pain, or severe/persistent diarrhea.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 18 years of age.
