How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual dose is 250 micrograms. For children (1 month to 17 years), the doctor calculates the dose based on body weight, up to a maximum of 1500 micrograms.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give this medicine as an injection or a slow drip into a vein about 30 minutes before your chemotherapy starts.

Important

The maximum daily dose for children is 1500 micrograms. For adults, it is typically a single dose.

  • Dizziness
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
RARE
  • Allergic reaction (e.g., swelling of lips, face, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, fainting, itchy rash)
  • Swelling or discoloration of veins
  • Feeling unusually happy or anxious
  • Feeling sleepy or having trouble sleeping
  • Poor appetite
  • Weakness, tiredness, fever, or flu-like symptoms
  • Numbness, burning, tingling, or itching sensation on the skin
  • Itchy skin rash or hives
  • Blurred vision or irritated eyes
  • Motion sickness
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Hiccups, gas, dry mouth, or indigestion
  • Stomach pain
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Joint pain
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Abnormal heart rate or reduced blood flow to the heart
  • Abnormal potassium or calcium levels in the blood
  • High blood sugar or sugar in the urine
  • High bilirubin levels (a pigment in blood)
  • High levels of certain liver enzymes
  • Abnormal heart tracing (like a longer QT interval)
  • Burning, pain, or redness at the injection site
  • Involuntary body movements (twitching)
  • Cough or shortness of breath
  • Nosebleed

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you have a bowel blockage or often get constipated.
  • Inform your doctor if you or your family have had heart problems, especially changes in heart rhythm.
  • Let your doctor know if you have unusual levels of salts (like potassium or magnesium) in your blood that haven't been treated.
  • Discuss with your doctor all other medicines you are taking, especially those for depression, anxiety, or heart conditions, as they can interact.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine, as it's unknown if it can harm the baby or pass into breast milk.
