How to Use

Dosage

The first injection (150 mg) and the second (100 mg) are given in the upper arm one week apart; after that, you will receive a monthly injection of 25-150 mg in either the upper arm or buttocks.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection into your muscle by a doctor or other healthcare professional.

Important

The maximum dose given at one time is 150 mg, administered monthly after the initial two weekly doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Trouble sleeping or interrupted sleep.
  • Flu-like symptoms, urinary tract infection, feeling feverish.
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin in your blood, which might cause breast swelling, sexual problems, or missed periods.
  • High blood sugar, weight gain, weight loss, decreased appetite.
  • Irritability, depression, anxiety.
  • Slow or stiff movements, shaky hands, shuffling walk, increased drooling, or a mask-like face (Parkinsonism).
  • Feeling restless, drowsy, or less alert.
  • Slow or long-lasting muscle spasms, often in the face, eyes, mouth, tongue, or jaw (dystonia).
  • Dizziness.
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements, which can be repetitive, jerky, or twisting (dyskinesia).
  • Shaking (tremor).
  • Headache.
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure.
  • Cough, stuffy nose.
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, toothache.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood.
  • Bone or muscle pain, back pain, joint pain.
  • Missed periods, milk leaking from breasts.
  • Fever, weakness, tiredness.
  • Reactions at the injection site, like itching, pain, or swelling.
RARE
  • Various infections including pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infection, bladder infection, ear infection, nail fungus, tonsillitis, skin infection, eye infection, skin inflammation due to mites, pus under skin.
  • Low white blood cell count, anemia.
  • Allergic reaction.
  • New or worsening diabetes, increased insulin levels, increased appetite, decreased appetite leading to malnutrition and weight loss, high triglycerides, high cholesterol, unusual secretion of a hormone controlling urine volume, sugar in urine, life-threatening complications of uncontrolled diabetes, low blood sugar, excessive water intake.
  • Sleep disorders, high mood (mania), decreased sex drive, nervousness, nightmares, involuntary jerky movements of the face, tongue, or other body parts (tardive dyskinesia), fainting, restless leg syndrome, dizziness when standing up, trouble concentrating, speech difficulties, loss of taste or unusual taste, reduced sense of touch and pain, tingling or numbness, confusion, catatonia (immobility and unresponsiveness), sleepwalking, lack of emotions, inability to orgasm, severe condition with confusion, muscle stiffness, high fever (malignant neuroleptic syndrome), brain blood vessel problems (stroke or mini-stroke), no response to stimuli, loss of consciousness, seizures, balance problems, abnormal coordination, head shaking, sleep-related eating disorder, coma from uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Blurred vision, dry eyes, glaucoma (increased eye pressure), problems with eye movement, eye rolling, sensitivity to light, increased tearing, red eyes.
  • Feeling like the room is spinning (vertigo), ringing in ears, ear pain.
  • Problems with electrical signals in the heart, slow or fast heartbeat, abnormal EKG, palpitations, low blood pressure, especially when standing, blood clots in veins (especially legs), atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), pulmonary embolism (blood clot in lungs), low oxygen in parts of the body due to poor circulation.
  • Shortness of breath, blocked airways, wheezing, sore throat, nosebleed, snoring/sleep apnea, lung congestion, crackling sounds in breathing, rapid shallow breathing, pneumonia from inhaling food, voice disorder.
  • Abdominal discomfort, stomach or intestinal inflammation, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, excessive gas, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), swollen tongue, inability to control bowel movements, very hard stools, cracked lips, intestinal obstruction (bowel blockage, lack of bowel movement).
  • Increased liver enzymes, hives, itching, rash, hair loss, eczema, dry skin, skin redness, acne, drug rash, thickened skin, dandruff, skin discoloration, flaky itchy scalp, yellow skin and eyes (jaundice), severe skin rash with blisters and peeling (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Increased CPK (an enzyme from muscle breakdown) in blood, muscle cramps, joint stiffness, muscle weakness, neck pain, muscle fiber breakdown and muscle pain (rhabdomyolysis).
  • Urinary incontinence, frequent and painful urination, urinary retention.
  • Erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems, missed or irregular menstrual periods, breast development in men, sexual dysfunction, breast pain, breast discomfort, breast enlargement, vaginal discharge, prolonged erection of penis (priapism requiring surgery).
  • Swelling of face, mouth, eyes, lips, body, arms or legs, increased body temperature, changes in walking, chest pain, discomfort, malaise, hardened skin, falls, very low body temperature, chills, thirst, abnormal posture, reduced body temperature.
  • Withdrawal symptoms.
  • Abscess, deep skin infection, cyst, bruise, dead skin cells, or wound at the injection site.

Important Warnings

  • Seek medical help right away if you get blood clots, especially in your legs (swelling, pain, redness) or lungs (chest pain, trouble breathing).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have dementia and suddenly feel confused, or experience sudden weakness, numbness on one side of your face, arm, or leg, or slurred speech.
  • Get urgent medical care if you have a fever, stiff muscles, sweat a lot, or become less aware (signs of a serious condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • If you are a man and have a painful or long-lasting erection, seek medical help right away.
  • Tell your doctor if you have uncontrolled movements of your tongue, mouth, or face, as your treatment might need to stop.

  • Contact a doctor immediately if you have a severe allergic reaction with fever, swelling of your mouth, face, lips or tongue, trouble breathing, itching, rash, or sometimes low blood pressure.
  • If you are having eye surgery, tell your eye doctor that you are taking this medicine, as it might affect your eyes during the procedure.
  • If you know you have very low levels of certain white blood cells needed to fight infections, tell your doctor.
  • This medicine can cause you to gain weight, and significant weight gain can be harmful to your health. Your weight will be checked regularly.
  • Your doctor will check for symptoms of high blood sugar or worsening diabetes, as this medicine has been linked to new or worsened diabetes.
  • This medicine might lessen your body's ability to gag or vomit, which could hide signs of swallowing toxic substances or other health problems.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless discussed with your doctor; it can harm the baby.
  • This medicine can make you dizzy, very tired, or cause vision problems, so be careful when driving or using machines.
