Palmeux

Palmeux is a medicine (antipsychotic) containing paliperidone, used to treat schizophrenia symptoms in adults as a long-term treatment, usually after initial stabilization with other similar medicines.

How to Use

Dosage

The first dose is 150 mg, followed by 100 mg one week later, both given in the upper arm. After this, you will receive 25-150 mg injections once a month in either your upper arm or buttocks. Your doctor will adjust your dose based on your symptoms.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping or interrupted sleep
  • Cold or flu-like symptoms, urinary tract infections
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin (which can cause breast swelling or discharge in men and women, or menstrual cycle problems in women)
  • High blood sugar, weight gain or loss, decreased appetite
  • Irritability, depression, anxiety
  • Parkinsonism (slow movements, muscle stiffness, tremors)
  • Restlessness, feeling drowsy or less alert
  • Muscle cramps or involuntary muscle contractions, especially in the face, eyes, mouth, tongue, or jaw
  • Dizziness, headache, fast heartbeat, high blood pressure
  • Cough, stuffy nose
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, toothache
  • Abnormal liver tests
  • Bone, muscle, or back pain, joint pain
  • Missed periods, breast milk discharge
  • Fever, weakness, fatigue
  • Reactions at the injection site (itching, pain, swelling)
RARE
  • Lung infection, bronchitis, other respiratory infections, bladder infection, ear infection, skin infections, tonsillitis, nail fungus
  • Changes in white blood cells (increased/decreased), anemia
  • Allergic reactions
  • New or worsening diabetes, increased insulin levels
  • Increased appetite, reduced appetite, malnutrition, weight loss
  • High levels of fats (triglycerides, cholesterol) in blood
  • Sleep problems, elevated mood (mania), reduced sex drive, nervousness, nightmares
  • Uncontrolled rhythmic movements of face, tongue, or other body parts (tardive dyskinesia)
  • Fainting, restless leg syndrome, dizziness when standing up, trouble concentrating, speech problems, loss of taste, reduced sensation or tingling in skin
  • Blurred vision, eye infection, dry or red eyes
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo), ringing in ears, ear pain
  • Heart rhythm problems (e.g., atrial fibrillation, slow or fast heartbeat), abnormal EKG, palpitations
  • Low blood pressure, low blood pressure when standing (may cause dizziness or fainting)
  • Shortness of breath, lung congestion, wheezing, sore throat, nosebleed
  • Stomach or gut inflammation, trouble swallowing, dry mouth, excessive gas, abdominal discomfort
  • Abnormal liver enzyme tests (GGT)
  • Hives, itching, rash, hair loss, eczema, dry skin, acne, red skin
  • Increased muscle enzymes (CPK)
  • Muscle spasms, joint stiffness, muscle weakness, neck pain
  • Urinary problems (incontinence, frequent, painful urination, retention)
  • Erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems, menstrual irregularities, breast development in men, sexual problems, breast pain
  • Swelling of face, mouth, eyes, lips, body, arms or legs
  • Increased body temperature
  • Changes in walking
  • Chest pain, general discomfort
  • Hardened skin
  • Falls
  • Yellowing of skin/eyes (jaundice)
  • Severe skin rash with blisters/peeling (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Very low body temperature, chills, thirst
  • Priapism (prolonged erection needing surgery)
  • Low blood oxygen to parts of the body
  • Blood clots in lungs (chest pain, breathing difficulties)
  • Bowel blockage
  • Aspiration pneumonia (food entering lungs)
  • Severe allergic reactions (including throat swelling, breathing difficulties)

Important Warnings

  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience blood clots (swelling, pain, redness in legs, chest pain, breathing difficulties), stroke-like symptoms (sudden weakness, slurred speech), high fever with stiff muscles (NMS), a painful, lasting erection (priapism), or severe allergic reactions (swelling of face/mouth, trouble breathing, rash).
  • Tell your doctor if you have Parkinson's disease, diabetes, heart problems, kidney or liver issues, epilepsy, breast cancer, or if you plan to have eye surgery. Also, tell your doctor if you experience uncontrolled movements of your face, mouth, or tongue.
  • This medicine may cause weight gain, so your weight will be checked. Avoid alcohol. Be careful when driving or operating machines, as it can cause dizziness or fatigue. Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding without discussing with your doctor.
