How to Use

Dosage

Take as prescribed by your doctor; do not take more often than every 4 hours. The usual starting dose for those new to opioids is 1.3 mg every 4 hours.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water, or open them and sprinkle the contents over soft food, such as yogurt, and eat immediately. Always take by mouth; never inject.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to hydromorphone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have breathing difficulties, severe lung disease, or sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep).
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney or liver problems, increased pressure in your brain, acute stomach pain, or paralytic ileus (bowel paralysis).
  • Do not use this medicine if you are currently taking or have taken MAO inhibitors (medicines for depression) within the last two weeks.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.

  • Repeated use can lead to your body getting used to the medicine, dependence, and a risk of overdose. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about becoming addicted.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy or dizzy. Do not drive or use machines if you feel drowsy, especially when you start taking it or when the dose is changed.
  • Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially other strong pain medicines (opioids), sedatives (like benzodiazepines), sleeping pills, or medicines for mental illness, as combining them can increase drowsiness, breathing problems, and lead to serious effects.
