How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, which is usually 4 mg every 12 hours if you haven't used opioids before. The dose will be increased until your pain is managed.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water. You can also open them and sprinkle the contents on soft food like yogurt, then eat it immediately. Do not crush or chew the capsule contents. Never inject the capsule contents into a vein.

Important

Do not take more often than every 12 hours. Your doctor will set your maximum daily dose.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to hydromorphone or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems or conditions that affect your breathing.
  • Do not use if you have sudden, severe stomach pain.
  • Do not use if you have increased pressure in your brain (e.g., severe headache, nausea).
  • Do not use if you are taking or have taken certain medicines for depression (MAO inhibitors) in the last 2 weeks.

  • Do not use if your bowels have stopped moving (paralytic ileus).
  • Children under 12 years old should not use this medicine.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can cause serious side effects and loss of consciousness.

  • This medicine can lead to dependence. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about this.
  • This medicine may make you sleepy and affect your reactions. Do not drive or operate machines if you feel tired or drowsy.
