How to Use

Dosage

A doctor or nurse will give you the injection. The dose is adjusted to your pain and response, typically 1-2 mg under the skin or 1-1.5 mg into a vein every 3-4 hours.

Method

The medication is given as an injection or infusion into a vein (intravenously) or under the skin (subcutaneously).

Important

Your doctor will determine your safe maximum daily dose to effectively manage your pain. Never exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, drowsiness
  • Constipation
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Dry mouth
  • Itching, sweating
  • Headache
  • Anxiety, trouble sleeping
RARE
  • Slow or shallow breathing (respiratory depression)
  • Drug dependence
  • Seizures
  • Small pupils
  • Low blood pressure
  • Breaks in breathing during sleep (sleep apnea)
  • Withdrawal symptoms if stopped suddenly (e.g., restlessness, anxiety, tremors)
  • Seeing or hearing things that aren't real (hallucinations)
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Skin irritation or hardening at the injection site

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Palladon if you are allergic to hydromorphone or have severe breathing problems, such as slow or shallow breathing.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of dependence on strong painkillers, alcohol, or drugs, as Palladon can be addictive.
  • Do not drink alcohol or use sedatives with Palladon, as this can increase drowsiness, breathing difficulties, and the risk of coma or death.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy or dizzy, as Palladon can impair your ability to do so.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using Palladon, as it may harm your baby.

  • Do not stop taking Palladon suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms.
  • Palladon is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the initial dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. (updated 24.3.2025)
