How to Use

Dosage

The first two doses (150 mg and 100 mg) are given one week apart. After that, you will receive an injection (25-150 mg) once a month. Your doctor will decide your correct dose.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine as an injection deep into a muscle, usually in your upper arm or buttock. It should not be given into a vein or under the skin.

Important

There is no daily dose as this is a monthly injection; the maximum single injection is 150 mg. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose for you.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Trouble sleeping.
  • Flu-like symptoms (like the flu, urinary tract infection).
  • High blood sugar, changes in weight (gain or loss), decreased appetite.
  • Irritability, depression, anxiety.
  • Parkinson's-like symptoms (slow movement, stiff muscles, tremors).
  • Restlessness, drowsiness, low alertness.
  • Involuntary muscle contractions (dystonia).
  • Dizziness.
  • Uncontrolled movements (dyskinesia).
  • Headache.
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure.
  • Cough, stuffy nose.
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, toothache.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels.
  • Muscle, back, or joint pain.
  • Missed periods.
  • Fever, weakness, tiredness.
  • Injection site reactions (itching, pain, swelling).
  • Increased prolactin hormone levels in the blood, which can cause breast swelling and erection problems in men, or breast tenderness and milk discharge in women.
RARE
  • Infections (e.g., lung, urinary tract, ear, or skin infection).
  • Decreased white blood cells or platelets in blood, anemia.
  • Allergic reaction.
  • Diabetes (new or worse), high fat or cholesterol levels, changes in appetite (increased or decreased).
  • Sleep disturbances, mania, decreased sex drive, nervousness, nightmares.
  • Fainting, restless legs, difficulty concentrating, changes in speech or taste, numbness or tingling in skin.
  • Blurred vision, eye infections, dry or red eyes, spinning sensation, ringing in ears.
  • Heart rhythm problems (including fast or slow heartbeat), low blood pressure (especially when standing up).
  • Breathing difficulties, nosebleeds, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, stomach problems.
  • Rashes, itching, hair loss, acne, skin thickening or redness.
  • Stiff or weak muscles or joints, muscle cramps, urinary incontinence or difficulty urinating.
  • Sexual problems (erection, ejaculation, or menstrual cycle issues), breast pain, breast enlargement in men, breast discharge.
  • Swelling in face, limbs, or body, fever, difficulty walking, feeling unwell.
  • Injection site problems (pain, swelling, sore, infection, bruising).

Important Warnings

  • If you have symptoms of a blood clot, such as swelling, pain, or redness in your legs, or chest pain and trouble breathing.
  • If you have dementia and suddenly experience confusion, weakness or numbness in your face, arms, or legs, or speech problems.
  • If you have a high fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, or confusion (a condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • If you are a man and experience a painful or prolonged erection (priapism).
  • If you have uncontrollable movements of your tongue, mouth, or face.

  • If you have a severe allergic reaction with symptoms like fever, swelling of your face, lips, or tongue, difficulty breathing, itching, rash, or low blood pressure.
  • If you are scheduled for eye surgery (e.g., for cataracts), tell your doctor that you are taking this medicine, as it may affect the surgery.
  • If you know you have a dangerously low number of certain white blood cells that fight infections in your blood.
