How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on blood tests, type of cancer, and how serious it is.

Method

This medicine is given as a drip into a vein (intravenous infusion) over 3 or 24 hours. It is usually given every 2 or 3 weeks.

Important

The maximum daily dose is determined by your doctor based on your treatment plan and infusion schedule.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Mild allergic reactions like flushing, rash, or itching.
  • Infections, mainly upper respiratory or urinary tract infections.
  • Sore throat, mouth sores, red and painful mouth, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting.
  • Hair loss (often severe and starting within a month of treatment).
  • Muscle pain, cramps, joint pain.
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in arms and legs (signs of nerve damage), which can last over 6 months after treatment.
  • Blood tests may show low platelet count (can cause bleeding/bruising), low red or white blood cell count, and low blood pressure.
RARE
  • Minor changes in nails and skin, reactions at injection site (swelling, pain, redness).
  • Slowed heart rate, high liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests).
  • Shock due to infection (septic shock).
  • Palpitations, serious heart problems (like blockages or muscle disease), fast heart rate, heart attack, breathing difficulties.
  • Fatigue, sweating, fainting, severe allergic reactions, vein inflammation (phlebitis), swelling of face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat.
  • Back pain, chest pain, pain in hands and feet, chills, stomach pain.
  • Blood tests may show high bilirubin (jaundice), high blood pressure, blood clots.
  • Low white blood cell count with fever and increased infection risk (febrile neutropenia).
  • Nerve effects with muscle weakness in arms and legs (motor neuropathy).
  • Heart failure.
  • Shortness of breath, pulmonary embolism, lung fibrosis, interstitial pneumonia, fluid buildup in the lungs.
  • Bowel obstruction, bowel perforation, colon inflammation (ischemic colitis), pancreatitis.
  • Itching, rash, skin redness (erythema).
  • Blood poisoning (sepsis), peritonitis, pneumonia.
  • Fever, dehydration, weakness, swelling, general unwell feeling.
  • Severe, possibly life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
  • Blood tests may show increased creatinine, a sign of kidney problems.
  • Irregular, fast heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia).
  • Sudden disorder of blood-forming cells (acute myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome).
  • Optic nerve problems and/or vision problems.
  • Hearing loss or impairment (ototoxicity), ringing in ears (tinnitus), vertigo.
  • Cough.
  • Blood clot in abdominal or intestinal blood vessels (mesenteric thrombosis), colon inflammation sometimes with persistent severe diarrhea (pseudomembranous colitis, neutropenic colitis), fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites), esophagitis, constipation.
  • Severe hypersensitivity reactions including fever, skin redness, joint pain, eye inflammation (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), skin peeling (epidermal necrolysis), irregular red patches (erythema multiforme), skin inflammation with blisters and shedding (exfoliative dermatitis), hives, nail detachment.
  • Loss of appetite (anorexia).
  • Severe, potentially fatal hypersensitivity reactions with shock (anaphylactic shock).
  • Liver dysfunction (hepatic necrosis, hepatic encephalopathy), some cases fatal.
  • Confusion.
  • Seizures (Grand mal), nerve disorder (autonomic neuropathy which can cause bowel paralysis and low blood pressure), cramps, brain disease (encephalopathy), dizziness, headache, coordination problems (ataxia).
  • Rapid breakdown of tumor cells (tumor lysis syndrome).
  • Fluid buildup in the eye (macular edema), seeing light flashes (photopsia), floaters in vision.
  • Vein inflammation (phlebitis).
  • Thickening and hardening of skin, blood vessels, and internal organs (scleroderma).
  • 'Butterfly rash' (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus - SLE), an immune system disease affecting many organs.
  • Blood clotting disorders (Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation or 'DIC'), a serious condition causing easy bleeding, easy clotting, or both.
  • Redness and swelling on palms or soles, which may cause skin peeling.

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor right away if you have allergic reactions like trouble breathing, chest tightness, low blood pressure, dizziness, weakness, or skin rash.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have fever, severe chills, sore throat, or mouth sores, as these can be signs of bone marrow problems.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have numbness, tingling, prickling, increased sensitivity to touch, or weakness in your arms and legs. Your dose might need to be lowered.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you get severe or long-lasting diarrhea with fever and stomach pain during or soon after treatment.
  • This medicine is not recommended if you have severe liver problems.

  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems or conduction disorders.
  • Tell your doctor if you have received radiation therapy to your chest area, as this can increase the risk of lung inflammation.
  • If you have Kaposi's sarcoma and have a sore or red mouth (signs of mucositis), you might need a lower dose.
