How to Use

Dosage

Method

The medicine is given as a drip into a vein (intravenous infusion), usually diluted.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Fast or slow heart rate
  • Nausea and vomiting
RARE
  • Skin rash
  • Severe allergic reaction (with breathing problems, sudden drop in blood pressure, or shock)
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Abnormal blood clotting, bleeding, and anemia
  • Increased muscle tone of the uterus
  • Too strong or continuous contractions, uterine rupture
  • Water retention (water intoxication) with symptoms like headache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, sluggishness, drowsiness, unconsciousness, low levels of certain blood chemicals (e.g., sodium or potassium), seizures
  • Low blood salt levels
  • Sudden fluid overload in the lungs, sudden short feeling of warmth all over the body
  • Angioedema symptoms (swelling of face, tongue or throat, difficulty swallowing or hives, and breathing difficulties)
RARE
  • Oxygen deficiency, suffocation (for the baby due to very strong contractions)
  • Low blood salt levels (for the baby)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to oxytocin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have very strong uterine contractions or if you should avoid a natural or vaginal birth.
  • Do not use within 6 hours of taking prostaglandin medicines (used to start labor or treat stomach ulcers), as effects may be too strong.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a latex allergy, as this medicine can cause a severe allergic reaction.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure, protein in urine, swelling), serious heart or circulation problems, or if the medicine does not seem to work.
