How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10 mg every 12 hours. Your doctor might start you on 5 mg to lessen side effects.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with half a glass of water, usually in the morning and evening at the same time (e.g., 8 AM and 8 PM). You can take them with or without food. Do not chew, break, or crush the tablets.

Important

The maximum daily dose can be up to 400 mg, as decided by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drowsiness, dizziness, headache
  • Constipation, nausea, vomiting
  • Itching
  • Poor appetite
  • Anxiety, confusion, depression, nervousness, sleep problems
  • Tremors, feeling sluggish (lethargy)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, dry mouth, hiccups, indigestion
  • Skin rash, increased sweating
  • Pain or increased need to urinate
  • Feeling weak, fatigue
RARE
  • Sudden trouble breathing, swelling of the face or lips, rash, or severe itching. These are signs of a very bad allergic reaction.
  • Very slow and shallow breathing. This is serious and can happen especially with too much medicine or in older, weaker patients.
  • Low blood pressure, which can make you feel dizzy or faint.
  • Seizures (fits), unusual muscle stiffness or uncontrolled muscle twitches.
  • Agitation, big mood swings, feeling very happy, or seeing/hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations).
  • Becoming dependent on the medicine or having withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking it suddenly (like yawning, sweating, or muscle pain).
  • Severe stomach pain, which could be signs of gallbladder or bowel problems.
  • Increased pain sensitivity where the pain does not get better even with a higher dose.
  • Sleep apnea (breathing stops for short periods during sleep).
  • Inability to empty your bladder (urinary retention).
  • Swelling of hands, ankles, or feet due to fluid buildup.
  • Life-threatening withdrawal syndrome in newborns if used long-term during pregnancy, with symptoms like irritability, hyperactivity, or unusual crying.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to oxycodone hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems, low oxygen levels, or high carbon dioxide levels in your blood.
  • Do not use if you have severe chronic lung disease, such as severe asthma or COPD.
  • Do not use if your intestines have stopped working (paralytic ileus), if you have acute abdominal pain, or if your stomach empties unusually slowly.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 12 years old.

  • Do not chew, break, or crush the tablets as this can lead to a dangerous overdose.
  • Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as they can increase side effects and cause severe drowsiness or breathing problems.
  • Taking this medicine with sedatives (like benzodiazepines) can cause severe drowsiness, breathing problems, and coma, which can be life-threatening.
  • This medicine contains oxycodone, which is an opioid and can lead to dependence or addiction.
  • This medicine can cause sleep-related breathing issues like sleep apnea (pauses in breathing during sleep). Contact your doctor if you experience this.
  • Do not inject this medicine. Injecting it can cause severe tissue damage, lung damage, and even death.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 24.3.2025)
