How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10 mg every 12 hours. Your doctor may start you on 5 mg to reduce side effects.

Method

Swallow tablets whole or split in half with half a glass of water, morning and evening at fixed times (e.g., 8 AM and 8 PM). You can take them with or without food. Do not chew or crush the tablets.

Important

Do not exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor. Doses for severe pain can be up to 400 mg daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sleepy, dizzy, or having a headache
  • Constipation, feeling sick to your stomach (nausea), or throwing up (vomiting)
  • Itching or sweating more than usual
  • Dry mouth or stomach pain
  • Feeling weak or tired
RARE
  • Feeling anxious, confused, or seeing/hearing things that aren't there
  • Shaking (tremors) or stiff muscles
  • Blurred vision, changes in how much you cry, or problems with hearing
  • Low blood pressure, making you feel dizzy when standing up
  • Trouble urinating or feeling a sudden strong need to urinate
  • Skin rashes or itchy red bumps (hives)
  • Signs of withdrawal if you stop suddenly, like yawning, watery eyes, sweating, or restlessness

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking this medicine and get medical help immediately if you have sudden trouble breathing, swelling of your face or throat, or a severe rash.
  • This medicine can cause addiction. Do not use it for longer than prescribed by your doctor, and talk to your doctor if you are concerned about dependence.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor will gradually reduce your dose.
  • Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice with this medicine, as they can increase the risk of side effects and drowsiness.
  • Swallow the tablets whole. Do not chew, crush, or inject them, as this can be dangerous and potentially fatal.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 24.3.2025)
