How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10 mg every 12 hours. Your doctor might start you on 5 mg to reduce side effects.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole or halved with water. Do not chew or crush them. Take them in the morning and evening (e.g., 8 AM and 8 PM), with or without food.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose. For non-cancer pain, the dose is usually 40 mg per day, but it can be higher. For cancer pain, the usual dose is 80-120 mg, up to 400 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling very sleepy (sedation), dizziness, headache
  • Constipation, nausea, vomiting
  • Itching
  • Reduced appetite or complete loss of appetite
  • Anxiety, confusion, depression, restlessness, trouble sleeping, unusual thoughts
  • Shaking (tremor), feeling very tired (lethargy)
  • Shortness of breath (difficulty breathing)
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, dry mouth, hiccups, indigestion
  • Skin reactions/rash, increased sweating
  • Painful urination, sudden urge to urinate
  • Feeling weak (asthenia), tiredness
RARE
  • Abnormal release of antidiuretic hormone, dehydration
  • Agitation, mood swings, extreme happiness, perception problems (e.g., hallucinations)
  • Decreased sexual desire, drug dependence
  • Unusual muscle stiffness, involuntary muscle contractions, seizures
  • Reduced pain or touch sensitivity, speech problems, fainting, tingling, coordination problems, changes in taste
  • Memory loss, difficulty concentrating, migraine
  • Changes in tear production, vision problems
  • Unusual sensitivity to sound (hyperacusis), reduced hearing, dizziness and spinning sensation
  • Increased heart rate, irregular and strong heartbeat, widening of blood vessels
  • Voice changes, cough, sore throat, runny nose
  • Mouth sores, gum inflammation, mouth inflammation, difficulty swallowing, gas, burping, blocked bowel
  • Increased liver enzymes, dry skin
  • Difficulty urinating (urinary retention), impotence, decreased sex hormone levels
  • Chills, pain (e.g., chest pain), general feeling of illness, thirst
  • Swelling due to fluid buildup (edema), swelling in hands, ankles, or feet
  • Withdrawal symptoms, need for higher doses to get the same pain relief (tolerance), accidental injuries
  • Herpes simplex (skin and mucous membrane disease), lymph node disease (lymphadenopathy)
  • Increased appetite
  • Low blood pressure, dizziness when standing up from sitting or lying down
  • Black and sticky stools, dental problems, bleeding gums
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Blood in urine (hematuria)
  • Weight changes (gain or loss), inflammation of tissue under the skin (cellulitis)
  • Aggressiveness
  • Increased pain sensitivity that does not improve with higher doses
  • Sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep)
  • Tooth decay
  • Right-sided stomach pain, gallstone colic, problems affecting a muscle in the bowel that can cause severe upper abdominal pain (Oddi's sphincter dysfunction)
  • Absence of menstruation (amenorrhea)
  • Life-threatening withdrawal syndrome in newborns if used long-term during pregnancy, with symptoms like irritability, hyperactivity, abnormal sleep patterns, high-pitched cry, shaking, vomiting, diarrhea, and failure to gain weight.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to oxycodone hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems, low oxygen levels, or severe lung conditions like COPD or asthma.
  • Do not use if your bowels have stopped working, or if you have severe stomach pain or slow stomach emptying.
  • Tell your doctor if you are elderly or weak.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.

  • Tell your doctor if you have thyroid or adrenal gland problems (like Addison's disease).
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse, or withdrawal symptoms.
  • Tell your doctor if you have inflammation of the pancreas, gallbladder problems, or severe pain in your urinary tract.
  • Tell your doctor if you have constipation.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a head injury, increased pressure in your brain, or a history of seizures.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken MAO inhibitors (medicines for depression).
  • Tell your doctor if you have recently had bowel or stomach surgery.
  • Tell your doctor if you have low blood pressure.
  • Tell your doctor if you have sleep apnea, as this medicine can make it worse.
  • If you haven't used opioids before, do not take the 80 mg tablets, as they can cause severe breathing problems.
  • This medicine contains oxycodone, which is an opioid. It can cause dependency and addiction.
  • These tablets are only for taking by mouth. Injecting them can cause serious and possibly deadly harm.
  • Avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as it can increase the effect of oxycodone.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or use machines. Be careful.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 24.3.2025)
