How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 5 mg every 6 hours. Your doctor will tell you the right dose.

Method

Take the capsule by mouth, with or without food. Never inject the capsule into a vein, as this can be very dangerous or deadly.

Important

Do not take OxyNorm more than 6 times a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, headache, and drowsiness
  • Constipation, vomiting, and nausea
  • Itching
  • Loss of appetite
  • Mood and personality changes (e.g., anxiety, depression, nervousness, sleep problems, unusual thoughts, confusion)
  • Tremor
  • Shortness of breath
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth
  • Rash, excessive sweating
  • Unusual weakness, tiredness
  • Lethargy
RARE
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Dehydration
  • Agitation, hallucinations, mood swings, extreme happiness (euphoria), decreased sex drive, drug dependence
  • Memory loss, seizures, involuntary muscle spasms, unusual muscle tension, decreased pain or touch sensitivity, itching or numbness, speech difficulties, fainting, taste changes
  • Pupil constriction, vision problems
  • Vertigo
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat (during withdrawal)
  • Blood vessel dilation
  • Respiratory depression (slow, shallow breathing)
  • Stomach and bowel problems, flatulence, difficulty swallowing, bowel obstruction, belching
  • Increased liver enzyme levels
  • Dry skin
  • Difficulty urinating (urinary retention)
  • Erectile dysfunction, low sex hormone production
  • Swelling in hands, ankles, and feet, thirst, withdrawal symptoms, chills, needing higher doses for pain relief (tolerance), general discomfort
  • Low blood pressure, low blood pressure when standing up (orthostatic hypotension)
  • Hives
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Aggressiveness
  • Increased pain sensitivity
  • Sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep)
  • Tooth decay
  • Colicky abdominal pain or stomach problems
  • Problem affecting a sphincter muscle in the intestines, causing severe upper abdominal pain (Oddi's sphincter dysfunction)
  • Missed periods
  • Withdrawal symptoms in newborns (if mother used the medicine during pregnancy)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to oxycodone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems, severe asthma, or heart problems caused by a long-term lung disease.
  • Do not use if your bowel movements are very slow or stopped (paralytic ileus).
  • This medicine is not for children under 12 years of age.
  • This medicine contains an opioid and can lead to dependence or addiction. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

  • Do not drink alcohol or grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.
  • Avoid using OxyNorm during pregnancy or if you are breastfeeding.
  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel sleepy or less alert, as your reaction time may be affected.
  • Tell your doctor if you are elderly, frail, have an underactive thyroid, low blood pressure, or liver or kidney problems.
  • Seek medical help if you have severe stomach pain with nausea, vomiting, or fever, as this could be a sign of pancreas or gallbladder problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe headaches or feel very sick, as this could mean increased pressure in your brain.
  • Watch for signs of drug dependence, such as needing more medicine than prescribed, using it for reasons other than pain, trying to stop but failing, or feeling sick when you stop but better when you take it again.
  • Inform your doctor if you are scheduled for surgery.
  • Tell your doctor if you have sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep) or other sleep-related breathing issues.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, as they can affect or be affected by OxyNorm.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 24.3.2025)
