How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 5 mg every 6 hours.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth. You can mix it with a cold drink. Never inject it into your veins as this can be very dangerous.

Important

Do not take OxyNorm more than 6 times a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Headache
  • Feeling sleepy
  • Constipation
  • Vomiting
  • Feeling sick to your stomach (nausea)
  • Itchy skin
  • Not wanting to eat
  • Changes in mood or how you act (like feeling anxious, sad, nervous, having trouble sleeping, strange thoughts, or confusion)
  • Shaking (tremors)
  • Trouble breathing
  • Stomach ache
  • Loose stools (diarrhea)
  • Upset stomach (indigestion)
  • Dry mouth
  • Skin rash
  • Sweating a lot
  • Feeling unusually weak
  • Feeling tired
  • Feeling very sleepy or sluggish (lethargy)
RARE
  • Allergic reactions
  • Not enough fluid in the body (dehydration)
  • Feeling restless
  • Seeing or hearing things that aren't real (hallucinations)
  • Mood changes (mood swings)
  • Feeling extremely happy (euphoria)
  • Lower sex drive
  • Becoming dependent on the medicine (drug dependence)
  • Forgetting things (memory loss)
  • Fits (seizures)
  • Muscles twitching on their own (involuntary muscle spasms)
  • Stiff muscles
  • Less feeling or pain sensation
  • Itching or numb skin
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Fainting
  • Changes in how things taste
  • Small eye pupils
  • Problems with vision
  • Feeling dizzy or like the room is spinning (vertigo)
  • Heart beating too fast or not evenly (during withdrawal from medicine)
  • Blood vessels getting wider
  • Breathing slowly or shallowly
  • Stomach and gut issues (like gas, trouble swallowing, blocked bowel, burping)
  • Higher levels of certain liver chemicals in blood tests
  • Dry skin
  • Not being able to completely empty your bladder
  • Trouble getting or keeping an erection
  • Low levels of sex hormones
  • Swelling in hands, ankles, and feet
  • Feeling thirsty
  • Withdrawal symptoms (like yawning, watery eyes, runny nose, shaking, sweating, feeling anxious or restless, fits, or trouble sleeping)
  • Chills
  • Needing higher doses for the same pain relief (tolerance)
  • Feeling generally unwell
  • Low blood pressure
  • Low blood pressure when standing up (orthostatic hypotension)
  • Itchy red bumps on the skin (hives)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to oxycodone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems, severe asthma, or heart issues due to long-term lung disease.
  • Do not use if your bowel movements are very slow or have stopped (paralytic ileus).
  • Do not give to children under 12 years old.
  • Do not drink alcohol or grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as it can increase side effects.

  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy or if the medicine affects your ability to react.
  • This medicine contains oxycodone, which is an opioid. It can cause dependency and addiction.
  • Never inject this oral solution into a vein, as it can cause very serious, potentially deadly side effects.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 24.3.2025)
