How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10 mg of oxycodone hydrochloride every 12 hours; in some cases, a 5 mg starting dose may be prescribed to reduce side effects.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with half a glass of water, with or without food, twice a day at the same time (e.g., 8 AM and 8 PM); do not chew, crush, or break the tablet, as this can release the medicine too quickly and be fatal.

Important

For non-cancer pain, the usual maximum daily dose is 40 mg, though higher doses may be needed; for cancer pain, doses are typically 80–120 mg, and can be increased to 400 mg in individual cases.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drowsiness, dizziness, headache
  • Constipation, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth (sometimes with thirst and difficulty swallowing)
  • Itching, rash, increased sweating, light sensitivity, hives, or peeling skin
  • Mood changes (anxiety, depression), changes in activity (feeling calm, nervous, or sleepless), thinking problems, confusion, speech issues
  • Weakness, tiredness
  • Shallow or difficult breathing, wheezing
  • Loss of appetite
  • Frequent urination
  • Tremor (shaking)
RARE
  • Allergic reactions (including severe ones like anaphylaxis)
  • Abnormal hormone production that reduces urine volume, dehydration
  • Changes in perception (feeling unreal, seeing things that aren't there), emotional instability, abnormal sensitivity to sound, feeling very happy or sad, restlessness
  • Increased or decreased muscle tension, involuntary muscle movements, memory loss, seizures, high blood pressure, speech problems, reduced sensation, coordination problems, fainting, tingling sensations, muscle spasms
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat (palpitations, especially during withdrawal), widened blood vessels, low blood pressure (when standing up)
  • Increased cough, sore throat, runny nose, voice changes, sleep apnea
  • Mouth sores, gum inflammation, mouth inflammation, difficulty swallowing, gas, burping, bowel obstruction, increased appetite, black stools, teeth discoloration and damage, gallstones, absence of menstruation
  • Increased liver enzymes, urinary tract spasm, urinary retention
  • Dry skin, herpes simplex (cold sores), nettle rash, cellulitis (skin infection)
  • Sexual problems (decreased libido, impotence), reduced hormone production in testes/ovaries
  • Accidental injuries, general body pain (like chest pain), feeling unwell, fluid retention (swelling) in tissues, swollen hands and feet, migraine, physical dependence with withdrawal symptoms, tolerance to the medicine, thirst, chills, changes in body weight
  • Lymph node disease
  • Aggression
  • Increased pain sensitivity
  • Tooth decay, dental problems
  • Problem affecting a sphincter muscle in the intestines (Oddi's sphincter dysfunction)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to oxycodone hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe breathing problems, very low oxygen levels, or very high carbon dioxide levels in your blood.
  • Do not take if you have severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart problems due to lung overload, or severe acute asthma.
  • Do not take if you have a certain type of bowel obstruction (paralytic ileus), sudden severe abdominal pain, or slow digestion.
  • This medicine contains oxycodone, an opioid, which can cause dependence and/or addiction.

  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can increase drowsiness, slow breathing, and lead to unconsciousness or death.
  • Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as it can increase the medicine's effect.
  • Do not use during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary, as long-term use can cause life-threatening withdrawal symptoms in newborns.
  • Do not use while breastfeeding, as oxycodone passes into breast milk and can cause breathing problems in the baby.
  • This medicine can affect your concentration and reaction time, so be careful when driving or operating machinery.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you experience very slow or shallow breathing, as this is a serious and potentially life-threatening risk.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 24.3.2025)
