How to Use

Dosage

Typically, 10-20 mg is taken twice a day, every 12 hours; a starting dose of 5 mg may be used to reduce side effects.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with water. Do not chew, crush, or break them, as this can lead to a dangerous overdose.

Important

Do not take more medication than your doctor has prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, headache, and drowsiness.
  • Constipation, vomiting, and nausea.
  • Itching.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Mood and personality changes (e.g., anxiety, depression, nervousness, insomnia, abnormal thoughts, confusion).
  • Tremors.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth.
  • Rash, excessive sweating.
  • Unusual feeling of weakness, fatigue.
  • Lethargy.
RARE
  • Hypersensitivity.
  • Dehydration.
  • Agitation, hallucinations, mood swings, unusually strong feeling of happiness (euphoria), decreased sex drive, drug dependence.
  • Memory loss, seizures, involuntary muscle contractions, unusual muscle tension, decreased pain or touch sensitivity, itching or numbness, speech difficulties, fainting, taste changes.
  • Pupil constriction, visual disturbances.
  • Vertigo.
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat (associated with withdrawal symptoms).
  • Blood vessel widening.
  • Respiratory depression.
  • Gastrointestinal problems, flatulence, difficulty swallowing, bowel obstruction, belching.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels.
  • Dry skin.
  • Urinary retention.
  • Erectile dysfunction, abnormal sex hormone production.
  • Swelling of hands, ankles, and feet, thirst, withdrawal symptoms, chills, needing higher doses for pain relief (tolerance), general malaise.
  • Decreased blood pressure, drop in blood pressure when standing up (orthostatic hypotension).
  • Hives.
  • Anaphylactoid reactions, allergic reactions.
  • Aggressiveness.
  • Increased pain sensitivity.
  • Sleep apnea (breathing pauses during sleep).
  • Dental caries.
  • Colicky abdominal pain or discomfort.
  • Problem affecting an intestinal sphincter causing severe upper abdominal pain (Oddi's sphincter dysfunction).
  • Absence of menstruation.
  • Neonatal withdrawal syndrome.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to oxycodone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems, severe asthma, or heart problems caused by chronic lung disease.
  • Do not use if your bowel movements are very slow or stopped.
  • Children under 12 years old should not use OxyContin Depot.
  • Do not drink alcohol or grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.

  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy or your reaction time is impaired.
  • Do not suddenly stop taking this medicine; always consult your doctor first.
  • Breaking, crushing, dissolving, or chewing the tablet can cause rapid absorption and potentially fatal overdose.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 24.3.2025)
