Oxiklorin is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lupus (SLE and DLE), and skin rashes caused by sunlight in adults and children.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual dose is 200-400 mg per day. For children, the dose is based on their weight.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Loss of appetite
  • Irritability, mood swings
  • Headache, dizziness, tiredness
  • Eye vision problems like blurry vision, changes in how your eyes focus, or deposits on the cornea
  • Nausea, stomach pain
RARE
  • Retinal disease, including changes in eye pigment or vision loss
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin rashes, worsening psoriasis, itching, darkening of skin or mucous membranes, hair lightening, hair loss, hives, sensitivity to light
  • Muscle weakness or disease, disturbed sensation or movement
  • Changes in blood cell counts
  • Porphyria (a rare metabolic disorder)
  • Seizures
  • Abnormal color vision
  • Ringing in ears, hearing loss, nerve damage to hearing
  • Heart muscle disease, including abnormal heart rhythm
  • Vomiting
  • Liver problems, including liver inflammation or sudden liver failure
  • Loss of skin pigment (vitiligo)
  • Low blood sugar
  • Accumulation of certain fats in tissues (phospholipidosis)
  • Mental health problems, such as depression, suicidal thoughts, hallucinations, nervousness, anxiety, confusion, agitation, sleep problems, or extreme mood highs
  • Involuntary movements, such as tremor
  • Difficulty breathing due to narrowing of airways (bronchospasm)
  • Sudden kidney failure
  • Allergic swelling (angioedema)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to hydroxychloroquine sulfate, 4-aminoquinolines, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have porphyria.
  • Do not take if you have psoriasis.
  • Do not take if you have a retinal disease (an eye condition).
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney failure.

  • This medicine can cause mental health problems, including strange thoughts, anxiety, hallucinations, confusion, depression, or suicidal thoughts. If you or someone close to you notice these symptoms, seek medical help right away.
  • Stop taking Oxiklorin and contact a doctor immediately if you get severe skin reactions like a rash, fever, flu-like symptoms, blisters, or skin peeling.
  • Oxiklorin can cause heart, kidney, or muscle diseases. Ask your doctor about signs of phospholipidosis. Your treatment might need to be stopped.
  • Long-term use might affect your vision or hearing. If you notice any changes, especially in your eyes, see a doctor regularly for check-ups, at least once a year. Be careful when driving or operating machines.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or planning to be, talk to your doctor. Oxiklorin should generally not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor says the benefits outweigh the risks.
  • This medicine contains lactose. If you have a sugar intolerance, talk to your doctor before taking it.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. May prolong the QT interval. Consider potential interactions. (updated 6.11.2023)
